What a strange day and age.

In a world connected by cell phones, web forums, blogs, emails, IMs, and everything else; the one thing the most needed is some sort of technology to help a human being actually hear another human being. Too often we are trying to speak than listen lately. It’s evident in the Mideast where counties collide and fight while bigger bullies egg on, or in a simple relationship where two opposite sexes try to comprehend each other’s differences. We are so fast paced and frenzied to live that we forget that people have feelings and thoughts, and we might be better off if we just listened to the person talking instead of filling up dead air with our opinion. Maybe constructive conversation is all we really need for peace in the world. There simply seems to be a lack of empathy in this world right now. Maybe the key is the amount of useless information that we come into contact with. It’s the cell phone; it’s the GPS, the map; it’s the sound system in the car that keeps our hands and eyes from really feeling the road, and experiencing the trip. Maybe there are so many useless conversations that we just retreat into ourselves because that is a nice, safe place with content that matters. Either way we have become this isolated group of people who cannot easily communicate the things we feel, which is truly sad.

If you are reading this, your job today is to find one person and really listen to what he or she has to say – even if they ramble. Choose a random person, like the girl at McD’s, or the gas station attendant, and have a conversation with that person and really listen. By doing so, you will be spreading understanding and peace. By listening you are also showing you care, and maybe that’s what listening really is. Caring.
