Watch FREE HBO and Network TV with new video placeshift website

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Well I am not exactly sure how legal this site is, but it lands a place on my website simply because it works as advertised. Since SlingBox does basically the same thing but for a fee, and since SlingBox is free there is at least a argument for watching the content you already subcribe to.
How It Works:

You download a player, and before you know it you are watching TV on your PC with a high speed connection. No server, no spy ware, just regular and premium TV. Apparently it uses some torrent technology to be able to stream that much video, so while you are watching you are also streaming to other clients.
This website won’t replace my trusty Slingbox but, I have to admit had I found this website before that purchase I may have never spent $199 on the box.

Send yourself reminders with FutureMe

Chronically forgetful? Always making lists - and then forgetting to look at them? FutureMe might be just what the doctor ordered.

FutureMe.org

FutureMe.org is a simple, no-frills web site with one purpose: helping you stay on top of your various obligations. Its usage is self-explanatory, but I’ll break it down for you anyway: use the form to write a reminder to yourself, enter your email address, and select a date to have the reminder emailed to you. This is way better than simply sending yourself an email, because in that case you get the email immediately - which doesn’t do you much good if the event you need to be reminded of is two weeks away. You can set reminders to be delivered up to 30 years from now (assuming the zombies haven’t taken over by then and obliterated all technology).

Also, you can set your reminders to be private (sent just to you) or public (viewable on the FutureMe web site). Browsing through the public messages makes for some good laughs.

Are we at a point where there are more mediums for news than actual news?

So this is the RSS and Web 2.0 generation…There are a million different ways to get information. Thousands of blogs that repeat the same information copied and pasted from Digg.com or some other website. The question is are we at a point where there are more mediums for news than actual news? I think the desire for information has actually trumped how much information has been written. Does this mean that for NoHeat.com readers I will not offer content that I have found somewhere else? No, it just means that on a slow news day where I have no major helpful item to post I will try and limit the garbage and only post relevant information.  Welcome to Web 3.0, pertinent information.

RingCube Software Squeezes PC Onto iPod

Mobile computing just got more portable. Making even the latest pocketbook-sized ultra-mobile personal computers look more like lumbering giants, RingCube Technologies Inc. unveiled software that can virtually squeeze a PC onto an iPod, USB keychain drive, cell phone or any gizmo with digital storage space.

RingCube’s MojoPac software mirrors a computer’s personal settings, programs and data on a storage device. Then, when it’s connected to any computer running Microsoft Corp.’s Windows XP operating system, the virtual desktop will run in a window of the underlying PC.

“You’re taking your digital soul with you on any portable storage device,” said Shan Appajodu, chief executive and co-founder of RingCube.

A user could toggle between the two computing environments. The company contends that everything you do with your MojoPac PC will remain private: the underlying host PC won’t retain any of the files or cache copies of what you did on MojoPac, the company said.

The software can be downloaded and tested at no cost for 30 days. If bought within a month of the product’s release, it will cost $29.99 with up to three additional licenses for $14.99 each. After the introductory period, the price will jump to $49.99, with up to three extra licenses costing $24.99 each.

MojoPac will be shown off at the DEMOfall 2006 conference, an elite showcase of emerging technologies being held this week in San Diego.

“I lug my laptop around with me everywhere and the idea that I could bring my work environment around with me on a USB key is really attractive,” said DEMO producer Chris Shipley.

The software works by creating a virtual operating system that runs the programs users load onto the storage device. RingCube says MojoPac supports any off-the-shelf applications, including PC video games and applications such as Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Office.

Limewire Hits Back Hard: Sues RIAA For Antitrust And Consumer Fraud

TechDirt Reports:

Last month, the RIAA sued Limewire after Limewire wouldn’t agree to simply roll over and pretend the RIAA’s interpretation of the Supreme Court decision in the Grokster case was actually what the Supreme Court said. The court actually said that services could be found liable, if they were shown to actively induce infringement. The RIAA and the MPAA pretended this meant that any file sharing network that had unauthorized content was flat-out illegal. Of course, that’s a bit of a stretch. So, it already seemed like it would be an interesting case, but now Limewire has hit back even harder with counterclaims accusing the RIAA of antitrust violations, consumer fraud and other misconduct. Specifically, they seem to be making the case that the RIAA only wants to shut down Limewire because it is a competitive distribution mechanism that they cannot control, which helps compete with their monopolistic control on traditional distribution. It’s an interesting claim that does make some sense, though the RIAA will simply try to paint Limewire as a tool for “thieves.” As with many of these types of cases, there’s probably a decent chance that the sides will settle before any decision is made, but in this case, it would be very interesting to see the actual outcome of any lawsuit — both on the issue of whether or not simply running a file sharing network is inducement and on whether or not there really is an antitrust claim here. If the case does go forward and the RIAA loses on the antitrust issue, it could have a big impact on the traditional labels, and could actually be a catalyst towards forcing them to accept the changing nature of the market. This is becoming a case well worth watching.
