Google to offer free domain names for gmail and web services
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Its not like Google to follow another company, but it appears that Google will be following AOL into the free domain name game. References were found in the Gmail for your domain beta that hinted to the fact that Gmail as well as Google Page Creator, Blogger, and Picasa Web Albums will allow users to use their own domain name. Strangely google will not be showing ads on anything but Gmail, which makes you wonder why? My guess is to lock users into a service because their domain is held by Google. My biggest concern is with both AOL and Google offering free domains, how will this impact domain name prices and choice? Hopefully Google will offer a domain buy back program that will allow you take ownership of your own domain, then again for free you might not care.

Got something to say?

I won’t be surprised if Google will indeed register the “free” domain name under their own name. But yes, it’ll be in their best interests to: a) offer a buy back program to allow the user to gain ownership of the name, and b) spell it out in the legal fine prints.
There’s no such thing as a free lunch, after all.
