I have a lot on my desktop typically. This is because I typically use my desktop as a staging ground for all of my files. However after watching my desktop icons bogging down my system every time they are reloaded I decided to something about it. The first part of that plan was to install CleanDesk the second part is to install Iconoid. Iconoid hides desktop icons when you don’t need them and see them when you do.

Iconoid is a small program that helps reduce the clutter and confusion of the Windows(r) desktop. With Iconoid you can: Automatically hide and display desktop icons Remove the colored box behind icon text Automatically set the colored box behind the text to an optimal color for your desktop picture Quickly and easily minimize all of the windows on your screen Save and restore the positions of icons Insure that icons do not move when you change screen resolutions Save icon locations for each screen resolution individually

    Sweet program I was tired of watching my desktop icons redraw over and over. Dumb windows.

    I like your ideas, but what worked for me was a program called Clutterkiller.
