Spotlaster is like Apple’s Spotlight on Steroids
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Lifehacker has a good article on Spotlaster which is like Apple’s Spotlight on steroids. When Apple introduced Spotlight some of us lamented over having a dumbed down interface for finding items. Spotlaster simply does find better for more advance users.

IP in Your Email, get your external IP and send it to any email
What was that IP address again? How many times did you wish you had the IP of your crashing router on your home network to do a quick reset. I used to have a Linksys that would crash at least once a month at the most inopportune times and I designed this application to send me my network’s external IP address everyday or what ever intervals I wanted. Many ISPs with broadband give you a dynamic IP address and this helps you know that you are up and running and what the IP address is. It also is a nice monitor sending hourly emails for testing flaky connections. I have grown used to being able to view my external IP from my system tray and at the request of others with the same problems I created IP in Your Email application (don’t send me emails on the name). IP in Your Email is a very simple application that queries your external IP address and puts it in your system tray. It then gives you the option of sending that IP address at any hourly interval to whatever e-mail address you would like. I hope you enjoy!

Just like HighSchool your coolness factor weighs in, now it just affects your webpage
Backlinks are important to search engines and wandering web traffic. Think of it like high school, if two people think you are cool and say it, you are not necessarily as cool as if you had 200 people thinking you are cool and saying it. It also matters who says it. If half of the people that say you are cool are your brothers and sisters or your teacher (someone who is traditionally uncool, sorry Jenine) then you are less cool than say the all star players on the team.
So in essence its important to get links from the cool cats if you can. A link from CNN or Foxnews.com can get you hundreds of thousands of clicks back to your website obviously, but you don’t have to land a top tier link to get that level of traffic, thats where a tool like the Free Backlink Checker can help. It helps you analyze where you are getting your back links from and how to try and get more from the same sources. If say website A already links to your website, send them an email and suggest yet another page they might be interested in. Remember if someone is already linking to your website they already think you are “cool”.
You do need to remember not to get greedy with coolness and backlinks. I get constant emails from people who want me to link to this or that and being a pest definetally reduces their cool factor and backlinks (at least from me). The point is you need to look at credibility of sources that link to you and strive to get “cooler” websites to link to you. Check out the Free Backlink Checker and see where your backlinks come from and discover how you might be able to make yourself …cooler.
Use email reminders to remind you to post new content to your webpage or blog daily
Weekly Noheat Blogging Tip. Use memotome.com to remind you to post your blog.
After writing the memotome.com tip yesterday I realized one thing I always needed to remember to do, which is post to my blogs and webpages. Your viewers need to see fresh content everyday to think it worthy of a return visit and Google’s Pagerank wants to see content updated as often as possible too. So if you actually blog for dollars and traffic matters, post and post often.
I find that there are parts of my day where I am in prime writing mood. My prime time is around Noon and 5PM, this is usually when my brain needs a break from the daily work grind which helps break up the monotony of the day. So set a reminder for yourself to post new content to your blog or webpages in your prime time. Even if you don’t post and you only write you will be closer to “Getting it done”.
Reminders in the right place at precisely the right time with Memotome.com
Its a sad commentary on my life that I can remember how much ram the first Mac had on any given day but my own parent’s birthdays slips my memory. Does this mean I am thoughtless? No it means my brain is full of nuggets of information not necessarily important to me. I have tried Google Calendar to keep myself from forgetting things but lets face it we all live in our email and if you refuse to use Outlook your options are limited, or all they? So what if you could get a reminder in your email at precisely the right time? What if you could also get an SMS message on your phone? If only there were integration with Google Calendar to this automatically. 30Boxes has an email reminder similar to what I want but I am getting tired of bouncing from Calendar to Calendar as each one of those applications evolve and update features. One day Google Calendar will have those features and until then I use Memotome.com which can send you reminders every day, weekly, every few weeks, monthly, yearly as well as one time reminders.
