Skype killer is a word that I’ve heard to describe magicJack, this device is so simple my grandmother could install one on her PC and begin using VOIP. With USB on one end and a phone cable on the other how much more simple can you get? Thats right you plug in your ANALOG phone into a USB device and you dial out, thats it. It remains to be seen how much a phone number will be and whether or not you get a voicemail, but as of right now I pay over $20 a month for Charter VOIP and if I can pay the projected retail of $50 and pay nothing else and be able to make FREE phone calls I will be first in line to buy a magicJack.

Update:  I received a MagicJack from MagicJack.com the other day and I can tell you right now that it works as advertised.  I have never seen a simpler to use product.  There isn’t even a CD with it, the software and drivers are installed via a USB drive built into the device.  You simply plug it into your computer, plug in your phone, and start calling.  I cannot figuire out if there is way to configure the number you get which makes other pause when calling you but never the less I be replacing the VOIP offered by my cable company with the MagicJack.  The call quality is perfect and other than having to have both your PC and your internet on to make the call I can barely find a fault in its execution.

More Update:  People tend to keep asking if you can hook up ANY phone to the MagicJack, the answer is YES.  Whether its a cordless phone to a cheapo $5 headset it will work.

Check it out

How awesome is that! I tell you what I think that one news article made my week. Seems like it would be cool for a dorm room? It sure would be cool for this poor college student to save some money on my cell bill Yikes!

  5. superfreak78 on MyAvatars 0.2 March 9th, 2007 8:21 pm

What? What does this have to do with government? VOIP is just as trackable as phone conversations. This has nothing to do with trackable or not. I think this device will do well if it can be properly marketed. The problem is you have to buy something Skype is free period. The only thing this allows is to use your own phone line.

I gotta tell you this site keeps showing up on my browser, everytime it does I smile. There is always something so cool, you just need to post more often.

The MagicJack doesn’t seem magic to me…

The MagicJack shouldn’t be connected to the USB port of a running computer, but directly to the DSL modem or the router. It could get it’s energy from the router’s Ethernet port. The entire phone software should be embedded in the device and not rel…

It is very similar device I saw it, I use google to search, someone call flashphone and come from mplat.com , and almost one years before.

I guess, MagicJack don’t have core technology.

    I recieved my MAGICJACK,Everything on the website/news
it is true to its word,
All that is required for you to do is register ,pick out the area code and presto you have a working phone again, what great product and just in the nick of time!
    - after getting my phone service shut off with no warning from SUNROCKET.

It is true $39.99 a YEAR / FREE SHIPPING if you spell SUNROCKET in the coupon code area.
after that $19.99 a year for a licence fee.

The great thing about it is thier are no taxes due on the phone because the service
    is given out for free.
A must for us frugal and budget minded consumers, never pay retail like they say.
    Have a great day talking!

can we use magicjack for fund raiser at our church?

  17. Jerry Martin on MyAvatars 0.2 October 30th, 2007 2:33 pm

I got mine a few weeks ago and I love it. Only problem is I can’t keep my DSL without the phone company’s phone service. Cable wants $42.00 monthly for the internet service which might work. Oh well I will wait till I can get a local number on Magicjack and see what I can do. In the mean time I am giving a Magicjack to my customers who purchase our pest control service.

My current provider for TELEPHONE, TV AND INTERNET (Three Services) is Atlantic Broadband.
Can I request from them to CUT MY TELEPHONE service and still be able to
use my access to Internet and TV services I actually have and use ?
I understand with my current Dell Windows98 PC model I have to use the TELEPHONE LINE TO OPERATE….. How is my PC going to work if ATLANTIC CO. CUTS MY TELEPHONE LINE ??
Please answer my question, IT’S CRITICAL FOR ME. Thanks in advance, Julio

  19. CharPaula on MyAvatars 0.2 November 13th, 2007 1:59 pm

AT&T DSL - many markets can be naked (no phone service required). Check your DSL provider to find if they have unbundled or naked DSL

I currently have Skype one year unlimited calling. I will definitely look at magicjack when my Skype plan expires as I’m not happy that Skype is owned by eBay

  20. phimo on MyAvatars 0.2 November 28th, 2007 11:40 pm

I just paid a cell phone bill of $70> and a cable, phone, internet bill $135> how can the magic jack help me? I need them all but the rates are killing me. I am not a techno geek and honestly don’t know wheather this will assist me. I need to know if I will need to seek wireless internet or will this be compatible with cable? Basically, I hate paying so much for what has become necessary communication tools.

  21. wiseassoffice on MyAvatars 0.2 December 5th, 2007 12:12 am

Phimo, MagicJack can at least make your phone bill go away. Oh and btw, quite a few people have asked about local numbers…While I didn’t get a local phone number MagicJack may be getting better at that. I’ll do some research to see if the number is changeable. Until then you can use GrandCentral to have a local number and have it forwarded to your MagicJack.

  22. Cory on MyAvatars 0.2 December 7th, 2007 4:07 am

Does GrandCentral offer services to Canada? I looked on their website but couldn’t find the answer. I would like to give MagicJack a try, but I would like to keep our home phone number…

Does anyone know if MJ works in Hawaii and visa versa?
    Thanks!
    CM

  24. Elena on MyAvatars 0.2 December 29th, 2007 1:41 am

This is an answer to CM,
I live in Hawaii and just received my magicjack today, it works very well and the tone is very clear, the area code 808 is not available yet, they have a list of states with their area codes so I pick CA, mjack gave me a Ca. number, when you call your Hawaii friends you have to call their 1-808 area code and there are no problems calling from magic jack, however, my daughter tried to call me back by dialing my new number and she was not able to connect to the magic jack number that was given to me nor my phone did not ring.

If anyone jhad the same experience and knows how to fix it, please email me.. why is it that my daughter in area code 808 was not able to call my 213-221-8059, magic jack number.
    Thanks,
    Elena

  26. Jerry Martin on MyAvatars 0.2 December 30th, 2007 7:52 pm

I have heard that the government is going out of business for many years now and so far it has not. I don’t know where your heard that but if you will let us in on it we can investigate. And if Magicjack does fold let’s use it while we can…..

  27. m72 on MyAvatars 0.2 January 5th, 2008 2:40 pm

MagicJack is NOT going out of business it is a private company that does not have tons of over head.

My questions are: 1.Will one Magic Jack work for all the phone extensions in my house? 2.Will it interfere with my webcam? and 3. Can I call Africa though MagicJack? Thank you.

  30. Jerry Martin on MyAvatars 0.2 January 7th, 2008 11:47 pm

It won’t work on phone jacks in my house so I am buying a cordless set of four phones for extensions.

  31. Ken West on MyAvatars 0.2 January 8th, 2008 1:14 pm

Magic Jack doesn’t have all the area codes yet, but they are growing pretty quick as they become available. I have had some luck wiring it up for a friend using it on all the extensions in the house, but you have to remember to disconnect your line from MA Bell. (Yes I said MA bell, because AT&T is buying everything back they owned before the break up and then some.) Would be nice if there was a ethernet version of this jack, but, my friends laptop is so small when they go on vacation, they can take it with them along with the bluetooth earpiece and they are connected to the phone without carrying anything bigger than an electric razor. I think this will become a great thing if the 19.95 per year can cover the costs. Maybe paying up front for 4 or 5 years might be a good thing if you suspect cost to raise soon. Do you chance this just being a fad? Just food for thought. Before the magicjack my friends were using Ymsgr with bluetooth and it worked but It was limited to call only friends with computers.

  32. JASON on MyAvatars 0.2 January 11th, 2008 5:27 am

To hook up vonage to all your phones, you need to disconnect the main phone service line (box outside), mine was just screwed shut and then I unplugged it like a phone jack. Then you phone lines in your house are closed, just connected inside. Using one of the phone jacks and an extension phone cord, plug the box in and run it to the jack, now all other jacks will work with the phone. I imagine you can do this with magicjack.

Hi,,,,,Saw MJ commercial and have been reading away here on your website. I understand the initial fee biz,,,,,the yearly contract fee after the 1 year,,,but what I’m not clear on is,,,,,,do you still have to pay your local cable or phone service company a fee every month ?? eg. my cable company charges me 29.99/mo for phone, all services included except for international, which doesn’t apply for me. If that is the case, MJ is not a money saver for me. Another thing, I travel between 2 locations ,,,,,,,, can I use MJ at both or need to purchase 2 MJs ?
Thanks in advance for answering my questions,,,,,,

I just got my magic jack and it worked so well as advertised, I selected a 714 area code which is Anaheim….. and everything was fine, Im planning to send it to the Philippines so that my daughter can call me for free here in california, I will keep you guys posted if this will work…but for now all I can say isSkype Vonage, will lose a lot of customers…thats for sure and I am one

  38. AnnMarie on MyAvatars 0.2 February 5th, 2008 1:46 pm

Is it necessary to keep the telephone service line that (be it cable or otherwise) in order for MJ to work. If so, it’s not worth it except for the international calling.

If anyone know a phone number for the company so I can find out answers myself, that would be great !

    Thanks anyway ;)

MagicJack works great! I have used one since they were first available and I tell you it is incredibly good. I have broadband anyway, and I have canceled my land line phone. You cannot tell this phone from a regular phone. The cost is about $40 bucks to buy which includes a year of calling. Each subsequent year is about $20. No monthly phone bills ever. This is phone service for about $1.67 a month. I am glad I bought one, and will never own a landline again.

Received my MagicJack on Friday, February 15, 2008. It took exactly 2 weeks for it to arrive after placing the initial order. Not bad!

Plugged my Nortel Vista 350 into the MagicJack and then popped MagicJack into my USB port and after a quick registration and phone number selection…presto!

I was in business! Made numerous long-distance phone calls in Canada that night and the next day without any problem. No echoes, no static, no drop-offs or lag!

Truly amazing for a guy that isn’t easily impressed! Hats off to Dan Borislow!
Dan seems to be a man for the little guy.
I retired a year ago and moved 7 hours north of where I lived most of my life.
My cell bills were in the neighborhood of $350. per month.
Now on a fixed income, I can call till the cows come home anywhere in Canada and the United States.
I like the fact that I now have a lower Manhattan, New York city phone number, considering I live in Canada.
People just can’t figure it out!
Dan…if you could just do something about gas prices next!

  63. pevoosow.com on MyAvatars 0.2 February 17th, 2008 12:11 pm

Pete…I used to live in Manhattan in the mid-90’s until I realized I couldn’t afford to live there! LOL

WOW in Canada! Great! I could have used magicJack in Canada while escorting Superloads this time last year. I love the idea you could be in a rest area talking on a phone with a coiled line hooked up to a little box hooked into a USB port. As long as WIFI is available.

I agree with Studioad. Come on YMAX magicJack, you have your own network, why not add in cellular? Put your own satellite in space. I’m sure when you do, Verizon or AT&T will be selling magicJack or something similar.

    Bob

  64. studioad on MyAvatars 0.2 February 17th, 2008 3:00 pm

I dont know if you guys notice it but on many websites that talk about VOIP services- like how much
services cost from month to month- all the stupid minute plans -I notice that they never bring up the Magicjack.
When Magicjack is the best phone deal in the last 50 years.
No paper bills in th email, with forclosures going on everywhere this product I know has helped out lots of families.

I really enjoy going on thier webpages and adding a comment or 2 ,most people think the 20 $ a year is an introductary offer like on credit cards and/or Comcast crappy combo deal.
I have to agree with Petes satellite idea also.

  65. pevoosow.com on MyAvatars 0.2 February 17th, 2008 5:14 pm

I just got off the phone with Time Warner Cable and was told I would save $20 a month by removing Digital Phone service.

    Let’s see…..$20 a month savings x 12 months = $240 savings a Year! WOW!

I’ll still have a fantastic, but very expensive Digital cable service with Premium Pod service, HBO and Pod, Cinemax and Pod, Showtime and Pod, TMC and Pod, STARZ, Encore &

RoadRunner for High Speed Internet access.

    Down from $175 a month to $155 a month.

That means I could buy 6 magicJacks for $240.

Hmmmm…………I need to buy new computers anyway. I might as well make phones out of them. LOL

Vonage is next. Let’s see again. $62 a month x 12 months = $744 a Year Savings! Double WOW WOW! NO PHONE BILL EVER AGAIN!

The 800#’s are paid for except for the minute charges I can do nothing about.

YMAX magicJack are you in the 800# service business?

Now all I have to do is test my FAX machine out.

    Bob

  66. Pete Hommersen on MyAvatars 0.2 February 17th, 2008 6:55 pm

    I love you guys!

Obviously, you are as impressed and excited about MagicJack as I am.
I have sent out an email to EVERYONE (a very large list) in my address book regarding my experience with MagicJack and I suspect, if most of them have any smarts whatsoever, that they will be purchasing MagicJack products soon.

I have info on MagicJack on my FaceBook. I have info on MagicJack on my Blog. I have info on MagicJack on some of my Forums.

Dan Borislow, could have been greedy like all of the regaular phone, cell phone and VOIP providers and charged us say, maybe 10 bucks a month and we still would have loved it. But no…for whatever reason, and that’s why I like people like him, he put a terrific product on the market that anyone, especially fixed income folks like myself, with an internet connection, can finally afford to use a phone at a cost that in today’s world of technology should be the norm.

I wonder how long its going to take for many of the other phone service providers take notice and either start whining, attempt to take Dan to court on some technicality or do what any mature, large, multi-national old company should do, and that is suck it up, stop being so greedy and bring your prices in line or at least close to that of MagicJack’s or shut up and fold up their businesses!

Bell, Rogers, Skype, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and all the rest of you…if you don’t like what I just said, give me a call on my MagicJack number, I’ll even pay for the call!

  67. Jerry Martin on MyAvatars 0.2 February 17th, 2008 9:58 pm

I think magicJack is creating a directory for its network. It has over 4 million numbers so far. WOW. Can you imagine over 4 million magicJacks have been sold since April ‘07! Somebody is makin mulla; wumpum; Federal Reserve Notes.

If you have $1,550 you can Re-Sell magicJacks. You buy 50 minimum for $31 each and Re-Sell for whatever price you want. Who got the bucks here? I have the website to display your Ad for just $1 a sale you make. I can have the user click on the Ad and send them to your email. Interested?

    > available. (Porting existing phone numbers and selected Canadian area
    > codes will be available shortly.)
    >

    > * Plus, individuals outside the United States can be called on their
    > magicJack phone number from the United States for FREE. (This should be a
    > particularly attractive feature for businesses, international students,
    > military personnel, their families, and international travelers.)
    > *
    > * Domestic U.S. and Canadian Travelers can take their magicJack with
    > them and make FREE calls to any phone throughout the U.S. and Canada.
    > *
    > * Free Follow Me - This feature allows users to send their incoming
    > calls to up to three other phone lines such as their cell phone or office
    > phone all at the same time.

    ERROR!

    Correction.

In my post on February 17th, 2008 11:26 pm, I said “Can you imagine over 4 million magicJacks have been sold since April ‘07! ”

Sorry, that is not correct. I don’t know how many magicJacks have been sold.

I was referring to the number of AOL members that signed up for discounted phone service way back when.

    Whew! Sorry ’bout dat.

I’m sure the magicJack is selling like hot cakes though.

Does Grand Central cost anything to get a phone number? If not, please invite me.

The MagicJack website is kind of … empty. It doesn’t have a lot of details to answer my questions.

studioad, just sent one to my son-in-law in Iraq. He should have it in about 9 days. I can\’t wait to see how it works from there. He and my daughter chat on skype, but the voice quality is really bad, it drops all the time. I hope the Magic Jack will work better. I also sent him a cheap phone to use. I will keep you advised. I support you plan to send them all overseas to the battle zones. Maybe if we provide the yearly service, the company will give us a discount on the unit itself.

I just ordered the magicjack but first went to the sales chat and asked a couple of questions. They answered the questions and the gave me a coupon code that saved me $2.00 and there was a shipping and handling charge for $6.95

I’m going to try to use a fax machine w/magicjack and hope it works because I have to have one for work. Has any one got a fax to work with it?

  78. Thumper on MyAvatars 0.2 February 20th, 2008 7:49 pm

I’ve checked into the grand central and it sounds to be pretty cool. I’d love an invitation if possible.
    This web site is great.

  79. Thumper on MyAvatars 0.2 February 20th, 2008 8:18 pm

I just received an e-mail sayign that my order has been filled and it appears that know I’m not being charged for shipping and handling and received the $2.00 discount total being $37.95

  80. Jerry Martin on MyAvatars 0.2 February 21st, 2008 3:27 am

To get Grand Central go to their site and fill in the information. They will send you an invitation if a number in your area is available.

Thumper the fax won’t work. The most I have been able to do is send one sheet at a time but when it get to the other end it can;t be read. I spoke with MagicJack support and they said they don’t support faxing but I should set the fax to it’s slowest setting. I have not tried that yet but will soon.
