Blockbuster Online is gearing up to take on GameFly.com with a new Video Game rental service. Blockbuster stores around the US have been adding games to their instore rosters in anticipation of the distribution model that has worked so well for them in the movie sector.
Currently you can use a online voucher to get a game each month through Blockbuster Online, now you will be able to choose from games for mail delivery as well. GamePass customers will be given special pricing for opting in to the Blockbuster Online program and current Blockbuster Online customers will be able to access this new feature for $10 extra a month for existing users of either GamePass or Blockbuster Online.
Initial programs were to allow games to take up two movie slots in their Blockbuster Online que because of the higher demand and extra cost of the games however Blockbuster decided they could get a premium for games on top of existing Blockbuster Online.
Blockbuster online has been testing different shipping configurations for the last few months as they hone in on packaging for the games which will need to be different to accept all games. During USPS shipping tests some of the games arrived cracked or broken. This may have to do with the thickness of some media used by game vendors (CD based games). To be able to ship at the cheaper rate all packaging must be under 1 ounce.
Rumors have it that Blockbuster is also testing with audio CDs as well in anticipation of a new music service delivering music through the mail channel. Blockbuster stores will not be adding audio to their in store roster. It is believed that the Music model will be accepted by the non DRM crowd although it is unclear at this point what partners they have chosen and it seems that the music distribution method is in its very early stages.

Got something to say?

I think most people have been expecting the video games a while. I am surprised that they are entering the audio market or even thinking about it but I suppose it makes sense that record labels take advantage of the overwhelming infrastructure of Blockbuster.
So are they doing away with the vouchers then?
I think both Steve Jobs and the guys over at GameFly just threw up in their mouth a lil bit
Looks like its getting dugg

$10 doesn’t seem like much I wonder how many games you get out for that much. How many songs do you get to download?
I think they ship you the music nearmissme, I don’t think they would do downloads.
I heard they were going to add a video online feature just like NetFlix
So when is this happening? Has it been cancelled? It has been a long time since this announcement.
Anybody?
With Blockbuster’s financial issues everything is on hold. They need to find a way to make all of their programs more profitable as before they are were after new acquisitions. The Gaming program is ready to be implemented and started, in fact the $4.99 Blockbuster online trade for a game program was to be the beginning of the two program\’s synergy. Stay tuned.
Is Blockbuster going to stream movies any time soon?
