Convert XLSX to XLS or Convert DOCX to DOC easily

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

It was bound to happen sooner or later, I knew I would get a document created by Office 2007. So what do you do if you get one of these gems of compatibility? Do you upgrade to graphical nonsense or keep working with tried and true Office pre 2007, well of course you do not upgrade. However the world being full of idiots you will find someone plunking down cash needlessly for Office 2007. So what do you do when you get that goofy file extension xlsx or docx file and need to convert it? Look to Microsoft and download their File Format Converters. This download can easily convert the file extension xlsx to a regular old xls. It also allows you to convert docx to doc and save back down if necessary.

There are also web based converters such as docx2doc.com or zamzar.com which will covert your docx to doc and email back to you.

Check it out

Yet another nice tip. Here’s another one, send it back and tell the idiot that sent you the file to convert it to something that everyone can use.

I despise people like this, same people who send you wordperfect documents. Hello its 2007!

[...] So how do you use digg as a SEO tool instead? It’s simple just digg every story no matter how interesting to the Digg crowd. For instance I wrote a story on how to convert a XLSX or DOCX to regular xls and doc files. You can do a search on Google for “Convert XLSX to XLS” and usually this site will be number one. How did I get there and why? First I dugg my own story. Then I waited, you see after searching on Google for popular searches I was able to determine that this particular article would be searched for often. The story was not sentilating enough for the digg crowd but it was completely useful to people doing searches on Google. Tip: Try MetaSpy to get your own ideas of articles people will search for. Because my article was linked to by Digg Google picked it up quickly on their search ranking and gave me a the search terms I had put in both of my subjects on Digg and the article. The Digg article later fell off and left two links to my website on the front page of Google where I get a considerable amount of traffic. [...]

I need to use very large xls’s and the 2007 version allows 1,000,000 rows, up from 64,000 in the previous version. That alone is reason enought for me to buy the new version. However I agree at this early stage sending someone a 2007 xlsx is a bit pathetic.

  7. PlymouthMinivan on MyAvatars 0.2 May 1st, 2007 9:19 pm

You are being sarcastic right about the 1,000,000 rows? Right? Wow

  8. Oskar Syahbana on MyAvatars 0.2 May 17th, 2007 4:11 am

@PlymouthMinivan: He might not be sarcastic and telling you the truth. On my last project I opted for Excel 2007 to process some 800K rows of data (each with 20 column). I know I can always use Access but I don’t need to use a napalm to light a cigarette right?

In one sentence you say how you should send back the doc and in the next you say people should get with the times! You are correct, it IS 2007 and xlsx is a 2007 product!

    @yuvaraj
If you are referring to apple’s mail application, there’s nothing you can do to open the xlsx spreadsheet. You’ll have to convert the xlsx on a pc with the converter mentioned above, and then move it back over to mac to open. We’ve had the same problem at our office.

To me the whole 2007 office package is a total mess and indeed a bad product. It is logical that they have improve some of the features from last version. But the greatest mistake was that they change the whole interaction.

People has adjusted to work with office in a certain way, and all of a sudden everything changes. They have grouped tools, the whole aspect is different, even some data features has been moved totally.

Therefore people need more of this docx to doc, because this 2007 product sucks.

There are other ways to convert OpeXML (.docx, etc.) files including OdfConverter, docx2rtf, and OxygenOffice.

Finally, no matter which way you chose, be sure you have the Office 2007 fonts installed so the document displays properly.

I think everyone is running into this type of problem with the new Microsoft-centric file extensions… they couldn’t just keep it simple.

I’m glad there are at least some decent solutions for people that are running into this problem.

Sometimes I forget to convert a docx file over and send it to a client, and they can’t open it. I guess maybe they should learn about some tools to help them out as well.

Oh wow, this is such a crappy dilemma. Microsoft had to create this problem, but apparently there is a reason for going to the docx format (which I don’t know yet). I hope there are some better solutions in the near future, because this has created tons of problems for people with older versions of their Office software.

I am having set of xlsx and pptx files, need to convert those to xls and ppt. but the command line is not doing any help.

for the the xlsx i tried

    c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12>excelcnv -oice c:\xl.xlsx c:\xl.xls

it gives out a xl.xls but its just the copy of my input xlsx file when i open that file in the office 2000 it gives error. i just renamed the xl.xls to xl.zip, now i can see the xmls inside. so it just created the copy of my input file and renamed it to xl.xls.

Any help on this highly appreciated.
