Convert XLSX to XLS or Convert DOCX to DOC easily
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

It was bound to happen sooner or later, I knew I would get a document created by Office 2007. So what do you do if you get one of these gems of compatibility? Do you upgrade to graphical nonsense or keep working with tried and true Office pre 2007, well of course you do not upgrade. However the world being full of idiots you will find someone plunking down cash needlessly for Office 2007. So what do you do when you get that goofy file extension xlsx or docx file and need to convert it? Look to Microsoft and download their File Format Converters. This download can easily convert the file extension xlsx to a regular old xls. It also allows you to convert docx to doc and save back down if necessary.
There are also web based converters such as docx2doc.com or zamzar.com which will covert your docx to doc and email back to you.

Got something to say?

Yet another nice tip. Here’s another one, send it back and tell the idiot that sent you the file to convert it to something that everyone can use.
I despise people like this, same people who send you wordperfect documents. Hello its 2007!
anything to keep me from writing more checks to Microshaft
Or, you can use this online conversion service: http://www.docx2doc.com - easy to upload .docx and convert to .doc on the fly
microsoft make me happy in the pants
[...] So how do you use digg as a SEO tool instead? It’s simple just digg every story no matter how interesting to the Digg crowd. For instance I wrote a story on how to convert a XLSX or DOCX to regular xls and doc files. You can do a search on Google for “Convert XLSX to XLS” and usually this site will be number one. How did I get there and why? First I dugg my own story. Then I waited, you see after searching on Google for popular searches I was able to determine that this particular article would be searched for often. The story was not sentilating enough for the digg crowd but it was completely useful to people doing searches on Google. Tip: Try MetaSpy to get your own ideas of articles people will search for. Because my article was linked to by Digg Google picked it up quickly on their search ranking and gave me a the search terms I had put in both of my subjects on Digg and the article. The Digg article later fell off and left two links to my website on the front page of Google where I get a considerable amount of traffic. [...]
I need to use very large xls’s and the 2007 version allows 1,000,000 rows, up from 64,000 in the previous version. That alone is reason enought for me to buy the new version. However I agree at this early stage sending someone a 2007 xlsx is a bit pathetic.
You are being sarcastic right about the 1,000,000 rows? Right? Wow
@PlymouthMinivan: He might not be sarcastic and telling you the truth. On my last project I opted for Excel 2007 to process some 800K rows of data (each with 20 column). I know I can always use Access but I don’t need to use a napalm to light a cigarette right?

“I despise people like this, same people who send you wordperfect documents. Hello its 2007!”
In one sentence you say how you should send back the doc and in the next you say people should get with the times! You are correct, it IS 2007 and xlsx is a 2007 product!
You ppl are funny. Just download the converter & shut up.
MICRO SHIT
I’m glad windows users get the opportunity to convert xlsx spreadsheets. The mac converter that Microsoft supplies does not.
I have one mail with xlsx , but i am unable to open the mail, plesase help me through mail.
@yuvaraj
If you are referring to apple’s mail application, there’s nothing you can do to open the xlsx spreadsheet. You’ll have to convert the xlsx on a pc with the converter mentioned above, and then move it back over to mac to open. We’ve had the same problem at our office.
?????????? ?????????? ??????? )))
Mac people rejoice!. Apple’s new iWork 08 suite includes Numbers app which easily opens the .xlsx files, as well as Pages app which opens .docx files, as well as Keynote which opens the .pptx files. Who cares about MicroShaft!
office2007 total stupid!!!
xlsx to xls and docx to doc
installed the microsoft file converter and it converts the .xlsx file to .xls but it is an eMpTY file when it opens in excell 2003 ! !! !
any ideas ?
Just wanted to say good stuff! Especially since I can download it as a file which I can put on our company library to install on users’ PCs rather than having to go through the office update process for each one!
Viva OpenOffice!!!
good
download openoffice.
M$ sucks so much!
I just copy the sheets into an .xls doc.
If you are a PC or Mac user I found this site where you can convert your docx. to doc for free http://www.convertmydocx.com/
Hi
Thanks for your information, and also thanks to zamzar.com, it’s very helpful
Thanks
Deb
To me the whole 2007 office package is a total mess and indeed a bad product. It is logical that they have improve some of the features from last version. But the greatest mistake was that they change the whole interaction.
People has adjusted to work with office in a certain way, and all of a sudden everything changes. They have grouped tools, the whole aspect is different, even some data features has been moved totally.
Therefore people need more of this docx to doc, because this 2007 product sucks.
Thanks for the links man. I usually only use online converters and zamzar.com fits the bill very well.
Thanks

Here’s a detailed review of the Office Compatibility Pack and a review of Zamzar.com converting .docx to .odt.
There are other ways to convert OpeXML (.docx, etc.) files including OdfConverter, docx2rtf, and OxygenOffice.
Finally, no matter which way you chose, be sure you have the Office 2007 fonts installed so the document displays properly.
There is also a .NET component for developers that can Convert between XLS/CSV/HTML/XLSX files: http://www.gemboxsoftware.com/GBSpreadsheet.htm

Nice tools. This is another good converter here: http://www.softinterface.com/Convert-XLS/Features/Convert-XLSM.htm
So HOW do you convert an xlsx file? I asked for the converter to be installed in my office on campus and they went ahead an upgraded me. Now I can’t read any of my own files on my computer at home. I’ve downloaded the converter from several different places and it DOESN’T work!! I just *love* Microsoft.
I think everyone is running into this type of problem with the new Microsoft-centric file extensions… they couldn’t just keep it simple.
I’m glad there are at least some decent solutions for people that are running into this problem.
Sometimes I forget to convert a docx file over and send it to a client, and they can’t open it. I guess maybe they should learn about some tools to help them out as well.
thanks for zamzar. It is very helpful………………………..
fhgfhgffhfhgf
nothing special
Ya, MS could simply keep the old extensions…
I think for convert docx to doc, for offline there was freeware.u can dowload http://download.freewarefiles.com/files/Docx2Rtf.zip. so the result of convert to rtf.so from that, u can use that like as common office.
thanks for this, very intresting
I have yet to use Office 2007 because I\’m still stuck in the ancient era of 2003. I love using open source apps such as Open Office and Star
zamzar just spins forever, ten minutes later it is not done uploading. docx2doc.com now makes you wait 24 hours or pay. No good online solutions that I can see right now.
Oh wow, this is such a crappy dilemma. Microsoft had to create this problem, but apparently there is a reason for going to the docx format (which I don’t know yet). I hope there are some better solutions in the near future, because this has created tons of problems for people with older versions of their Office software.
this is a good converter software
Zamzar worked fine for me, it was a short .docx (1 page) but it only took about 3-4 minutes.
I REQUIRED TO CONVERT OF XLSX TO XLS
thank u
I don’t know why people keep office 2007 anyway! I have office 2007 on my work PC… There are basically no new features sing half a decade! MS is running circles around you. And then there is the performance of OOO. Lets not even go there; Microsoft’s has 10x the features and still operates and starts faster.
I am having set of xlsx and pptx files, need to convert those to xls and ppt. but the command line is not doing any help.
for the the xlsx i tried
c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12>excelcnv -oice c:\xl.xlsx c:\xl.xls
it gives out a xl.xls but its just the copy of my input xlsx file when i open that file in the office 2000 it gives error. i just renamed the xl.xls to xl.zip, now i can see the xmls inside. so it just created the copy of my input file and renamed it to xl.xls.
Any help on this highly appreciated.
Thanks
good
nice software.
nice article as well. you explained it really well….
nice article dude. you rock. i was looking for something like this……….
I just needed this type of software and u covered it nicely thanks….
This is good to know about. So many times I have run into this problem, whether I forgot to change the filetype on a Vista machine or it was someone else sending me .docx on my XP machine.
Why can’t they agree on a single format anyway? What I hate about Microshit’s products is the many different formats they come with. You simply can’t get it right.
I heard about not bad application-xlsx repair Microsoft, know how will display a dialog box with the question whether this worksheet should actually be scanned, also with help it you may try to open the necessary *.xls, *,xlt, *.xlsx, xlsm, *.xltm, *.xltx, *.xlam file and see an error message on the screen instead of it: Microsoft Excel unable to read file, This file is not in a recognizable format, etc.
thanksssssssssssssssssssssss
ZAMZAR.com was FREE and FAST. I was able to convert an xlsx file to xls within 3 minutes of finding THIS site. So THANKS for the info!
made my dads day
La verdad es que la gente de Microsoft debería haber hecho lo mismo que cuando pasaron de Office97 a Office2000: mantener la extensión del fichero es lo más seguro para no incordiar a los usuarios!!!

Bill is an idiot. Apparently he isn’t smart enough to use a database which this application — given all this data — clearly cries out for. His company should immediately begin investigating alternatives to Bill instead of spending good money after bad on Office07.
