Nintendo and Apple to partner on games for iPhone
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

If you can’t beat them join them. With the iPhone days away from being launched Nintendo has apparently begun working with Apple, licensing a limited amount of content for the new phone. It was rumored a while back that Nintendo was planning on releasing a phone on their own, however this was scuttled shortly after the iPhone was first shown in January.
These exclusive games will be released on the iTunes Store at a $29.00 price point a few months after the iPhone launches. No word on whether Nintendo will be distributing iPod versions of these games. A major hangup in development has been the lack of buttons on the iPhone that was remedied by a touchscreen D-pad. One might wonder how Nintendo fans may see view playing on a phone without a traditional D-pad.
Asked anonymously whether or not these games would cut into Nintendo DS sales, we heard a resounding no. The logic is that because the licensed games will be exclusive and cater to an older audience they should not intrude into Nintendo’s existing markets.
The one thing Nintendo does worry about is their amount of control of Apple. While not developing a cell phone internally has its advantages, giving up control of platform has not historically been a practice Nintendo has taken. Nevertheless Nintendo sees gaming on Mobile Smart Phones as a threat to their core business and a partnership with Apple could be seen as a bold move into a very profitable market. One thing is for sure Nintendo should expect to share in the marketing spotlight of the iPhone in the same way that AT&T has.
Can’t wait for Nintendo to put games on the iPhone you can some here and here

Wow that is sweet I wonder how it will work with the touch screen Dpad. I personally would have rather seen them partner with Sony that Nintendo. Oh well retro gaming is kind of in, so maybe Mario on iPhone will be cool.
I guess I will be staring at my iphone quite a bit then. I remeber being so addicted to Mario on the original Gameboy.
Rumor: Nintendo Working on iPhone Games…
An eyebrow-raising rumor has it that Nintendo and Apple have teamed up to bring games to the iPhone, with $29 Nintendo games coming to the touchscreen device within a few months of launch. The games are said to use a……
Don’t know how the games will function without a d-pad? Did you guys miss the DS completely?
Brain training is obviously the killer app here.
hope the iphone will be cracked as soon as possible
then whohooo the next best thing since gameboy
Brain Training? Phone Games are best for mindless activities while waiting. Sitting at a airport and delayed for 2 hours is a perfect time for mindless activities such as a phone game. Otherwise I cannot see anyone JUST playing games on the iPhone. Although Jobs is pretty smart about corraling the content with hardware excitement. Makes me think of when the Connectix VGS was introduced at the same time the iMac was. Just more gas on a already hot fire.
Somehow i doubt this is true, nintendo has its own touch screen interface device in the ds and it wouldnt move its market to a different device. a digital d pad? i dont think so
ridiculous. but it works - you got extra hits on your site from the apple drones. well done.
A lot of people said that was true of Apple introducing a cell phone, it boils down to money. If it is mutually beneficial to Nintendo and Apple and everyone takes a nice amount of coin home anything can happen. Apple would see you a flaming pile if you buy it. Whether or not Nintendo has a touch screen device right now is besides the point. How many adults own one? I think very few.
Nintendo has always been in love with Apple now they get to be inside one.
Digital D Pad or Touch screen Ipod, both are just as illogical. Looks like we will probably get both.
I have to agree with anthony pittarelli, Nintendo already has a hit handheld gaming system. Why would they want to share their success?
And touch screen controls aren’t such a good idea in my opinion.
I too am skeptical, but there was one time when the beattles would never be on iTunes for some of the same reasons. Getting partnered with Apple makes sense to get some attention. I agree with David when he points out that very few adults would consider owning a DS however many are old school enough to put it on their iPhone. If it plays well than go for it.
I second the comment on MacDailyNews by Mr. Reese…
Didn’t it say games targeting an older audience, NOT older games. Probably puzzle games, pinball, golf, bowling, etc.?
Games using the motion sensor could be very cool! There are some motion sensor games for PowerBooks and MacBooks that are fun.
Whatever it is, it’s good news and at $30, not a bad deal.

I agree this is fake news though it would still work well on the iPhone because much like the Wii, the iPhone has built-in accelerometer.
Would the author of this article mind naming or linking to their source. There is no mention of where this rumour came from so it is very difficult to take seriously.

This partnership makes sense and since the Wii I have often joked that Nintendo is in bed with Apple. Here’s why:
Wii pushes new technology to forward their numbers
Wii is backwards compatible with GameCube games
Wii’s design is very Apple inspired
Apple pushes new technology to forward their numbers
Apple is backwards compatible with PPC software thanks to Rosetta
Apple’s design makes computing sexy
Nintendo is to gaming what Apple is to computing - underdogs that make great systems that are simple to use.
There’s no question that this could NOT have been done with Sony.
Apple should buy Nintendo.
I agree with Wookie. It would be truly amazing. However, I think this Ninendo games on an iPhone is just a dream-filled rumor.
Apple is making 3rd party developers use web 2.0 standards. So how can this game be? Especially since the iPhone doesn’t run Flash, there’s hardly a good way to pull this off. The standards of the iPhone Javascript function top out at 5 seconds. Unless Apple made special concessions for Nintendo - which would be absurd and widely attacked.
I would proudly eat my words, but I sincerely doubt this is even remotely true.

Since the beginning of ipod, there has always been one major problem.
The battery, it has always sucked power in time of use. I have worked as an shopkeeper and seen all the ipods up to the 2nd gen of Nano. the battery time has always been an issue for the customers. And now when the hype has gone mad about this phone thingie, im having nightmares about the spec of the phone. I mean, why relase games to a product when the product will die shortly after starting up the game?
And IF Nintendo is going to release games to the iphone i sure hope that they consider the gaming experience and not the hype…

“How many adults own one? I think very few.” -David Pearson
As far as I understand, the majority of DS owners are adults.
This isn’t 1997.
I guess it depends on what you define as an adult. Blickblocks I would suspect is around 16. An iPhone is geared to 25 - 45 year old adults. Its simply an incredulous statement that adults run around with a Nintendo DS to play games. Yeah right! I have enough stuff to carry around let alone my kids toys LOL.

AT&T’s hired 2,000 employees just to handle the launch, which is probably a smart move, considering that 19 million mobile phone users (67% belonging to other networks) to get their paws on one in recent survey.
