Google Translate has a made little noticed yet important change, introducing a dictionary. Now when you translate something you can use their dictionary to look up how a foreign language’s word translates as well as its meaning in their language. They also go on to use the word in a few translated sentences so that you get the complete meaning of the word.
Is Google is working on their own full fledged dictionary? It makes sense, when Firefox spellcheck cannot get the proper spelling of the word it sometimes is easier to google the word instead of launching Microsoft Word. You usually get an idea very quickly of its correct spelling and links to dictionary.com.
People have been using the term “Google it” for a while now to define words or phrases. As Google is becoming less of an information aggregator, and more of a content provider it still fits nicely into their model. A dictionary would compliment Google Documents nicely as well as Blogger, Firefox with Google Toolbar, not to mention their search engine. Of course ad revenue from the dictionary would only increase their bottom line.
On this one we have no inside information, however it does seem like a logical direction given the latest development.
