Microsoft infringing on one of Apple Patents?

Is Microsoft infringing on one of Apple’s patents? Its no secret Microsoft uses transparent windows in its new Vista operating system, and while no one thought they came up with idea, no one looked to find out exactly who did. During one of my searches of Google’s Patent search they have I found a interesting patent by Apple. The patent describes a situation where a window that covers another would allow a certain transparency when you move the window over another. In their words:

Get your freshly squeezed AlarmD screensaver

After reading a pretty interesting article on Lifehacker about a really cool web alarm clock called AlarmD my very first thought was how cool, it should be a icon on my desktop or a screensaver. So after a few minutes of thought I was off coding. This is the first second (0.2) release of my AlarmD screensaver. I am off to test it and shall be back with improvements. Checked on my Vista test machine and we are Vista compatible.

Get your iPhone early, iPhone knockoffs show up on eBay

So the new iPhone is not even out yet and the web is all a flurry of iPhone knockoffs. Its been going on for quite a while for iPods but most thought the bar would be set too high for a iPhone knock off, not so apparently. Sporting what is believed to be a Windows Mobile interface that is skinned to resemble the iPhone GUI and a case that from a distance would fool most people its dressed to look the part. The problem is that it is filled with much of the same software silliness as a iPod knock off which is to say a GUI nightmare. Sure you may be saving hundreds of dollars and getting about the same looking experience but the reliability of such a device is highly suspect as is its usability. Apple’s biggest selling point is its ability to make functions that are normally hard use a little easier for the average user. For what its worth you could at least be the first on the block with something that at least looks like a iPhone.

Metacafe and YouTube embedded in Wordpress

So some of you might have noticed that Noheat has been featuring some Metacafe and Youtube videos, embedded to boot. This new capability is courtesy of the My Video Wordpress plug-in from ozblog. It’s the only plug-in that I could find that was reliable at displaying embedded video from YouTube, Google Video, and Metacafe. Although there are tons of plugins out there that do the same thing this one gets the extra added benefit of being easy to use. Kudos to Ozblog!

Get your IP addess emailed to you from your Mac

We’ve been asked several times how to have your IP emailed to you automatically in case your Mac is stolen. We created IP in your Email for just that reason, among others, but we really couldn’t recommend anything for the Mac and we weren’t super anxious to build it ourselves. Fortuneatly there is already an application that does something similar. It’s call WIMP and as featured in the Metacafe video above.

Build a High Power Ping Pong Ball Gun

This one has little to do with cool Tech news, however what a cool Mcguyverish way to cause Office mayhem (insert evil laugh here).

WordPress Theme Generator, build your own theme bloggers

I was about to write this one off as just another haphazardly put together theme generator, but after a few minutes of creating a theme I could easily see NoHeat readers getting some use out of this site. Using color selectors and drop down menus this theme creator can create some nice looking themes. For such a simple interface you can get some powerful results, meshing overlays can make a nice looking Web 2.0ish theme in a matter of seconds. You have the ability of selecting either a two column or three column theme and even you own logo. The resulting themes look uniform and clean. Best of all the theme generator is free, with only a footer telling your readers where it came from.

Double Wire, the next Line Rider

Oh boy yet another web game that is sure to hurt your productivity. This game feels a little like a spiderman game although its called double wires. The point is to move your little stick character as many yards as possible by clicking on the light blueish purple blobs. Your character’s “wires” go out and attach to each item you will be hanging on and then swing you to your next location. Beware this game can be extremely addicting, and looks to be the next line-rider.

Nintendo and Apple to partner on games for iPhone

If you can’t beat them join them. With the iPhone days away from being launched Nintendo has apparently begun working with Apple, licensing a limited amount of content for the new phone. It was rumored a while back that Nintendo was planning on releasing a phone on their own, however this was scuttled shortly after the iPhone was first shown in January.
