Wordpress is marked as crashed and should be repaired

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Bad things can happen to good blogs, you should live by that motto.  I have said it time and time again, but you don’t know how well you live it until something really does go bad.  Earlier today I was greeted with the “your Wordpress such and such database was marked as crashed and should be repaired”.  For all of you that will see this error all is not lost as opposed to what many other sites will tell you.  Simply put your MySQL database has become corrupted.  This seems to be happening more and more lately, just try doing a search for the errorsMany people just throw their hands up in the air and shrug their shoulders loosing months and maybe even years of data.

The first thing you should do if you see an error like this is to read it.  Simply put many people see an error and freak out.  Look at what Wordpress is trying to tell you.  Most likely your MySQL (the back end to Wordpress) tables have become corrupted and you need to do what Wordpress says and repair them.

The second is to log into your CPanel (if you have one, contact your host to skip this step) and look for “MySQL Databases”, scroll down to the bottom of your screen and you will see “phpMyAdmin”.

Click on phpMyAdmin, when it loads in your browser (on version 2.9.0.2) you will see a dropdown menu to your left.  Click on it until you get to the database that looks like shorthand for Wordpress (like wrdpr**).

Here you will see all of the databases that make up the backend of Wordpress, looks complex doesn’t it?  Its not trust me, these are just relational databases like any other and since your Wordpress told you to “repair” your database find the database that went awry and check it, check them all if you are unsure, there is a “Check all” button.

Under the “Check All” button you should see a “With Selected” drop down.  In that menu you will see “Repair Table”.  Click on that and wait.

Once done your databases should be repaired.  Go to your site and take a giant sigh of relief.  If it didn’t work now would be the time to call your host or try to use your backups.  You did have backups didn’t you?  If you did not have the Wordpress Database Backup plugin installed you should have had it installed because it comes stock with most Wordpress installs and whether you did or not a FAQ on how to backup and or restore your backup is here. If you haven’t yet you should get a third party backup solution such as BlogBackupOnline just in case everything goes bad.

Get Dugg with five words

I have been looking at the articles that got Dugg to the front page of Digg and some headlines from other sites and am seeing a pattern.  It looks like most of the successful article’s headlines are five words.  It may seem hard get your point across in five words but maybe thats not the idea.

Five words can make for a vague title but by being vague an article can be about several other things and thus be more interesting to the reader.  Also since most people are hard pressed for time five words can sum up the article quickly to know whether or not they want to Digg an item or not.  If you look at the Latest News section of CNN or any other site you will see that most of the articles headlines are 5 to 7 words length.

Google GrandCentral Invites for Comments

We got this idea from DownloadSquad, they are giving invites to GrandCentral for everyone that comes by and comments on their blog.  So since I have a whole slew of GrandCentral invites to give away I decided to share the wealth and give away GrandCentral invites for people who comment here.

GrandCentral lets you combine all of your phone numbers into one portable number.  It gives you voicemail in your email (on the web) and the ability to turn off the ringing on your phone between certain times.  Another nice feature are the local phone numbers so all of your friends don’t get hit with long distance fees when they call you.

GrandCentral was purchased by Google a few weeks ago, but since I was already a member I got in before they went to an invite system.

So if you comment I will send you a free invite, be sure that your email is correct.

We ran clean out of invites, get some from Noheat readers here.

Gmail TODO lists get things done

Looking for an easy way to organize your to-do lists? As most of my readers already know I use Gmail for everything, so I built my TODO lists there. I simply added a label called “TODO” and then created a filter that takes any email with subject “TODO” and labels it accordingly. Then I forward them via SMS to my phone so they can always be with me. When I complete an item I simply relabel it “TODO completed” so I can look back at things that are done. I am in my email a lot and when I see something in my TODO I have a instinct to want to clear it out which helps me get things done. This is also a great way for other people to send you a TODO. Just let them know that they need “TODO” in your subject.

Add a Taskbar to your Second Monitor

Our much admired friends over at MediaChance have released yet another gem and this time it’s free. This application is for all of the dual and triple monitor setup super productive types. Simply put it adds a task bar to your 2nd or 3rd screen. MultiMonitor will show the applications that are open on only that monitor. A couple of extra bonus features are a clipboard extender that shows up in the lower right of your 2nd display. Oscar the creator of the software also added a button near your minimize button that can automatically move your windows to your primary or secondary display. This is a fiercely useful tool for dual display setups and seems to be very stable, we would expect nothing less from Oscar.
