Get WIRELESS Xbox Live for your Xbox 360 without adapter

We have a Xbox 360 in our house and recently got a free Xbox Live subscription and wanted to try it out, however our Xbox 360 is at the other end of the house, and low and behold it is not equipped with an Xbox 360 wireless adapter.  It was also too long to run a cable from one end of the house to the other.  The Xbox 360 adapter is around $100 in most stores so thats out of the question, seems silly to charge so much for a wireless adapter.  So I thought long and hard about how to connect the Xbox to the internet so that we could access Xbox Live.  A scour of ebay showed slightly cheaper adapters but you are still paying over $70 shipped to get it to you.  There must be another way I thought, there must be a way to get wireless xbox live for your Xbox without the adapter.  Turns out there is a couple different choices…

The first choice is to ditch Microsoft and go with Linksys.  They sell an adapter made for gaming systems called the Linksys WGG11B, they usually go for around $30 to $50 dollar depending on whether or not you buy it new or not.  Here’s a link…Linksys WGA11B

One other solution is to either rent or buy another cable modem for that part of your house.  This is usually a simple connection because it can be really inexpensive to rent an additional cable modem.  Of course over time the rental fees usually $5.00 end up costing you what a cable modem costs over the span of a year, and actually cable modems go for around $12 on ebay.  As long as your cable company allows this and doesn’t need to do anything fancy to your cable modem this is a really nice option since your TV already has a cable connection. Cable Modems

The other solution I was able to come up with is to take an existing computer such as a laptop with a wireless connection and share the connection with your Xbox 360.

All you need to make this work are a laptop with wireless connection, a wireless router, and a crossover cable available most places fairly cheaply Here’s a link…Crossover Cable

Its actually pretty simple to do, follow the simple instructions below for sharing your wireless internet laptop with a Xbox 360.

1.  Go to Start and go to “Connect To”, if you don’t have a “Connect to” folder in your start menu you can go to your Control Panel and click on “Network Connections”.

2.  Right click on your Wireless Network Connection.

3.  Once in the properties of your Wireless Network Connection go to the advanced tab.  If you are inexpereienced at sharing a network connection out you can click on the Network Setup Wizard and follow the prompts for sharing out your connection.

4.  Once you have setup your wireless laptop to share out the wireless connection through your regular network connection simply connect the crossover cable to the laptop and to the back to your Xbox 360 and sign up for live.  Be sure to have setup a hotmail account if you don’t already have one, it is required for accessing live.  Also beware that if your connection to your wireless router is spotty in that section of the house you will have issues connecting.

5.  Enjoy your Xbox 360 live!  If you need Xbox Live points here a couple really good deals…Xbox Live Points

One thing to note about the 360’s ethernet port is that is will automatically readjust itself for a straight through or a crossover cable. Meaning you can use a plain ethernet cable instead of having to buy a crossover cable. It might save a little bit of cash.

i tried adding ICS but i get an error because XP wants to use my default IP address but that one is assigned to my router (i have 3 PCs on the router) so i get an IP address conflict error. Is there any way around that? My Netgear router says i am not able to reassign the IP addresses.

    Thank-you

hey, do you know if i could just get like a linksys usb adapter and plug it straight into the usb in the back where the $100 Xbox 360 one would normally go? because if I can, that would be so much cheaper and easier.

and also, do you know if a wireless-G receiver can pick up internet from a wireless-N transmitter? Because I don’t know if it will just slow down from N to G or if it wont work at all.

my internet is downstairs and connected to a phoneline. My xbox is upstairs. Is there any way of getting xbox live other than running a cable through the house?

going to give this a try!!

Q: sometimes the connection in that room is spotty. If I shelled out the money and bought the XBOX wireless adapter, do you think my XBOX connection would be just as spotty as the method you point out here?
