The Day the Internet Crashed

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I guess I couldn’t resist this parody of a news broadcast of the internet crashing. This of course would only be possible if every server in the world were Microsoft based.

Eric Tipton: “…The screen froze up…there was nothing I could do. I tried to force quit all the open applications but nothing worked.”

Water into Fuel found in Cancer Cure Quest

I definitely think this qualifies as cool technology. John Kansas was not looking for an answer to the energy crisis. He was looking for a way to cure cancer. Four years ago inspiration struck in the middle of the night. Why not use radio waves to kill the cancer cells. What he ended up finding was a way to burn salt water as a fuel…

How to “FTP” a file on a Mac

Every week I get asked from one person or another “how do I FTP a file” so while this is not a super technical update to NoHeat I thought I would make something that other technical people can forward off to other FTP newbies. This week the FTP question was for the Mac so I chose to showcase CyberDuck. CyberDuck is a opensource and free program that can easily manage many FTP accounts. While its true that OS X has software built in that can connect to your FTP the easy of use for a novice in setting up would take longer than just downloading CyberDuck. Also note that I am a fan of Transmit for the Mac but since it is a shareware title and CyberDuck is free I will cover CyberDuck instead.

Google Adsense CPC vs Referrals 2.0

So for a few days I have been testing the new referrals platform that Google is testing inside Adsense. Lucky Adsense advertisers get the chance at making extra revenue from Cost Per Action instead of CPC. The bounty can be high, instead of making a few cents off of the click you could make anywhere from $1.00 to $20.00 (from my experience) and it can look very attractive.

Script window size and placement with Sizer

If you have a large resolution screen you know as well as anyone that sometimes windows management can be a real task. With Sizer you can uniformly resize your windows and tell them where to reside by script. Simply enter a description, select the size, and tell the application where you would like the window to be located at. This creates a script that will show up when you right click on the windows resize handle.

Eye Dropper tool on Steroids

If you spend any time creating graphics or websites your mind revolves around color and color codes. Visual Color Picker is a color picker on steroids. It is able to retrieve color information from just about anything that shows up on your screen even moving objects with a designated key that captures any color your cursor touches. Visual Color Picker can acquire color information in RGB, HSV, CMYK and HTML HEX values which makes it handy for whatever application you need the color for.

Wait you say I wanted a link back from your very awesome PR4 or PR5 website. The links are mirrored and crawled by Google at a few of my most popular sites. Make Tab Mix Plus Display more than one Row of Tabs

How to Geek has a really good article on how to make Tab Mix Plus for Firefox display more than one row of tabs with the click of the mouse. As many times as I have fiddled with this addon I have never seen this option before. It is defenitally worth a look.

“To set this option, you must have the Tab Mix Plus extension installed. Assuming you do, open up the Tab Mix Plus options dialog via the Tools menu.
Choose the Display tab/icon on the top, and then make sure you have the Tab Bar tab selected.”

The BEST RSS Reader showdown

Those in the know have witnessed my frustration with Google Reader, with hundreds of feeds I have been struggling to burrow through all of that tastey RSS goodness. The problem with Google Reader is that it just doesn’t work the way my mind works. I want to read about certain things, filter by keyword, and scroll through hundreds of feeds like I scroll through email. Google Reader just doesn’t cut it. While its awesome that you can access your feeds anywhere it still doesn’t take the place of a software application that can sort all of that data in real time.
