Emulate a Verizon Wireless 700w Smart Phone using Windows Mobile device emulator.  As a owner of a 700wx I was especially interested in this writeup from Enumerating.  It goes through how to set up a emulated 700w that you can try out software on before adding it to your Treo and possibly being disappointed.  There is so much software written out there that is either poorly written or doesn’t support the 240 X 240 screen resolution.  This makes it easy to try before you buy without the fear of doing something nasty to your perfectly set up phone.

Where did windows help go? Vista ate it.

Where did windows help go?  If you are using Vista it will happen to you eventually, you will need to read the directions on how to use a piece of software and it might not be there.  Microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided to axe their perennial Microsoft help system because “it wasn’t Vista compatible”.  Hello Microsoft, its your own software, make it compatible.  So rather than update their own software they decided to abandon the legions of software titles out there that rely on their Microsoft Help system to provide documentation.  However weeks after Vista was a gold master they somehow reversed their assertion and allowed users to download the help system from their website (so was it Vista compatible?).  So you now have a option to get the old version of Microsoft help from their website (you can also copy over a version from your XP), but wait there has to be other options right?

A company called HelpExplorer has created a free for single user title called Help Explorer Viewer which essentially installs a high powered version of help that can read .hlp, chm, and Microsoft Help 2.0 (.hxs) files.  Featuring a super fast search engine and a customizable interface this is help documentation on steroids.  Several of my previous help files didn’t even have a search function and I found this so much more useful than the old flat file I had to navigate.  If you are software developer you can also redistribute this version and bypass Microsoft’s flipfloppy software distribution and know that your users will always have a robust help section.  If your old software’s help no longer works Help Explorer Viewer is a must have.

BugMeNot adds disposable email addresses

If you not are familiar with BugMeNot you are missing out.  BugMeNot essentially allows you to bypass registration pages with generic logins from BugMeNot.  Say for instance you want to read a news site but don’t have the password, never fear BugMeNot is here.  BugMeNot has a huge amount of logins and the BugMeNot Firefox extension will automatically log you in.  No more registrations!

But wait there’s more!  BugMeNot now has a instant disposable email.  So on the off chance that you actually do have to register you can avoid getting your email spammed.  So instead of giving away your email every time you need to register for something you can just make up a email using @bugmenot.com and retrieve your email from them instead of your regular email.  Email sticks around for 24hours and then vanishes.

Create Screencasts and share them with ease

Ever need to send a screencast or screenshot to a novice?  It can take a while to do a screen shot or screencast and then email or post to server so they can download it.  Jing makes it super easy to make a screencast or screenshot.  You install the software (for Mac or Windows) and then choose to do a screenshot or screencast, Jing will capture the screen action and create a url that you can email or IM to whoever you want to.  Because its just a link its super easy for even the novice to view.  The one downside is the video or screenshot is locked into Jing.  While this isn’t the worst thing it does mean you’ll have a hard time putting your screencast on flickr or YouTube.  If nothing else though it gives you are really easy way to share your screen with the world.
