Google Adsense has long been the choice of bloggers when it comes to monetizing their website, and for the most part bloggers stray away from other choices because they simply don’t make any money.  The biggest issues with other ways of monetizing your blog is they all promise the moon and never deliver, surprising you with high payout threshold or spooky low click through rates that make you wonder if they are actually tracking your ads.

Then along came WidgetBucks, in minutes of finding a website with WidgetBucks on it I was showing my own ads.  Not only that but I got $25 for just signing up.  Now keep in mind this isn’t $25 that I’ll never see, this is $25 on the way to my $45 payout threshold that pays out via Paypal every 45 days after the end of the month.  In quite a few ways we are already better than Google Adsense using WidgetBucks.  They also have a cool referral program that allows you to make 10% of the commissions that your referrals make FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR.  So, if you refer someone, and they make $100 in commissions, they pay you $10; if they make $1,000, they pay you $100 and it doesn’t stop there. Typical WidgetBucks are seeing $3-6 CPM which is a pretty decent payout compared to measily Google Adsense. Speaking of Google Adsense WidgetBucks are compatible with Google Adsense and can be used on the same page.

The ads themselves are pretty decent looking and are flash based.  You can see a WidgetBuck ad in the upper left hand corner of this page.  They are available in every imaginable size and color to match your site perfectly.  You pick the genre of ad or allow their page crawling software to pick products based on your content.  The categories while decent are one area that I like to see some improvement.  There simply needs to be more categories.

The back end interface is frankly the way that Google Adsense should work, with an easy to use single page setup page that has some Web 2.0 bling to ease adding your WidgetBucks widget to Wordpress, TypePad, Blogger, or web page.  Ads are tracked hourly and seemed very accurate.

All in all WidgetBucks looks like a perfect compliment for blogging revenue with or without Adsense.  Finally an alternative that looks good, treats a blogger right, and actually pays out.

The key to having success with programs like widget bucks is to target the right ads for the right audience. You can’t just throw it up on any blog and expect to make money like you can with Adsense. Targeting is key.

Tara is right. Targeting the right ads is the key to success in this kind of program.

Well I’ve actually moved my widgetbucks to the right corner of the sidebar. It just wasn’t performing at the #1 spot. The problem with WidgetBucks is that the offers they showcase are rarely compelling. While you target all you want it seems Widgetbucks products and categories are extremely limited. There must be a deal or “call to action” to get people to click. This is where WidgetBucks is a little weak. There is promise though. If WidgetBucks can start showcasing FatWallet or Spoofee kinds of deals I might try them in the number one position again.

We use both WidgetBucks & AdSense to make $$. Both are great tools if used properly.
