So by now your Gmail account has been updated with a IMAP and a new contact management system has finally surfaced (we broke the story Oct 31st of 2006).  So whats next you ask?  Well one thing that was in testing that hasn’t been rolled into our good old Gmail yet is a better signature system.  Yes html signatures and/or add Google contact code will be showing up in Gmail.  This feature along with the new signature code will be called Google Contacts and our bet is that it will somehow eventually find its way onto Android (their new phone OS).  But wait, thats not all, apparently Google Chat is going to expand into other services much like Meebo.  Google wants to be the central point for all of your IM and email and we have heard (rather loud) whispers that meebo like features were sneaking into the next rev of Gmail.  Deeper down the rabbit hole we were hearing that a possible buyout or partnership with Meebo might be in the works as early examples looked eerily familiar to our testers.  But wait there is even more, Google is working on toolbars that integrate into both Outlook and Thunderbird allowing some core Gmail functionality to complement their IMAP functionality.  An extra benefit of installing the toolbar Google will see the “on behalf of Gmail” header sent along with each email disappear from outgoing mail.  The other reason for adding the toolbar will be tighter Google Documents integration and a way to report back to Google email that has been marked spam to greater increase their already stellar spam protection.  Just remember where you heard it first.

I had actually speculated the inclusion of the HTML enabled signature in my post on http://techkeyla.blogspot.com/2007/11/5-things-i-want-from-new-gmail.html, on Nov 7. Seems Google is really upto revolutionise everything. Be it social networking, mobile OS, or now Mail.

    Great article!

Here’s a script for the Greasemonkey Firefox add-on that allows you to use several HTML signatures in gmail:
