Firefox’s built in spellcheck is great however its not perfect.  For some reason the powers at be decided that you get to be an ace speller in some places and in others not so much but with a simple hack to your about:config you can have your spell checker in small text fields as well as big ones.

Just type “about:config” into your address bar.
Then type “layout.spellcheckdefault” into the filter bar
Change the default value from 1 to 2
You are done!

Now one thing I have noticed is that fields that are auto-filled by Google Toolbar or another auto-fill tool will not be spell checked.  Also some special forms for search do not work.

Does this tweak increase the memory consumption ?

I guess spell check is not available for all fields by default because the developers don’t really see a need for it. Most of the things that need spell checking are those that appear in text-areas in web pages (e.g. those that need a lot of typing).
There are instances where spell check is not needed. For example, do Firefox need to spell check whenever you type in your user name? Though, spell checking when typing in certain text boxes like search might be useful to some.
