Create Expiring Meaninful Expiring URLs

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Temporary URLs are not a new thing. TinyURL is a well know URL shortener, but whats missing from most URL Shortener sites is the ability to customize your URL to make it more meaningful.  MeaningfulURL does just that, it allows you to create a temporary URL that is easier to remember.  Your URL works for 3 days and can be used in any number of combinations.  Say for instance you want to send Dave a download link to a new product you have created, you could use “thanks.to/dave” as the URL.  Here are some more of the possibilities….

thanks.to, apologize.to, happy-birthday.to, greetings.to, goodluck.to, best-wishes.to, bestwishes.to, congrats.to, vote.to, merry-christmas.to, welcome.you.to, enter.to, special.thanks.to, big.thanks.to, many.thanks.to, say.iloveyou.to, need.you.to, invite.you.to, appreciation.to, our.thanks.to, our.appreciation.to, we.apologize.to, invite.to, your.vote.to, and propose.to.

Think Twice Before you post

Are you a blogger? I am. The popularity of social networking sites, such as Myspace, YouTube, Facebook, etc., is continuing to grow. Blogging allows us to express ourselves in new ways. Oftentimes it may be easier to write what we are feeling for total strangers to read than to verbally express ourselves to someone that is close to us. The end product, people are posting content and pictures that may be embarrassing, inappropriate, upsetting to others, etc. Until recently, the general public was generally unaware of the real consequences of what they write or portray – even if it’s done simply in the spirit of fun or as a joke.

The December 10th CNN article, “Young women drink, party, post” (http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/12/10/face.book/index.html), has brought the subject to the surface. This hot topic is now being discussed on talk shows like Dr. Phil. However, how many of you pay attention to hype?

So, here is the straight and narrow. Blogging has real consequences. There are legal liabilities. Yes, you can be sued for such acts as releasing confidential or proprietary information (deliberate or not) or defamation of character. You may be admitting to illegal activities on your blog, such as drinking underage, illegal drug use, fraudulent activity, shop-lifting, etc.

Another thing you may not realize is that corporate employers are checking! They are requesting your blogger profile, just as they do background or reference checks. And guess what, they will not hire you if you reveal undesirable activities online – this can be anywhere from inappropriate behavior to not portraying the corporate image they wish to project to simply appearing irresponsible or immature. And even after you are employed… Yes, they can fire you for your blog content! The substitute teacher that was fired not once but twice for his band/video content is only one such case. There have been cases in all walks of life that have resulted in termination of employment or serious fines; and in some countries, individuals have been imprisoned for openly sharing their online views!

The bottom line, think twice before you post. Think about your professional image, not just your personal one. You may think your personal life is not your employers business, but then you would be wrong – according to numerous corporate actions, court cases, convictions, etc.

FileBox eXtender now Vista Compatible and Free

One of the features I missed the most from XP was a little Dialog Box Extender utility called FileBox eXtender. This simple program allowed you more control over your save and open file dialogs.  For instance, when I use the open file dialog in a program I don’t want to switch to “details view” and “sort by date” every time I open the dialog. The settings I set should be automatic.  Filebox does all this and more. There are tons of features such as being able to jump straight to a saved folder or recently used folder to drop your files when saving.  You can also roll up windows so you can get your dialog boxes out of the way when you need to locate a place to save your file. The “window shade”-like button transfers to regular explorer windows as well so you can reclaim some screen real estate.  Also included is a pin feature that will prevent any window you “pin” to the desktop from being covered by any other windows. FileBox used to be a shareware utility but its owners made it free when they didn’t think they could make the jump to Vista.  In an unexpected move though they released a new version (also FREE) that is now Vista compatible.

Don’t get dead the Web 2.0 way with SafeCheckIn

The modern world can be a very lonely place. In the news you hear about people disappearing and no one knows the better until its way too late. As someone that did the whole internet dating scene, I can attest that there are some real nut jobs out there and having someone to check in with and make sure you arrived safe and sound is a great idea.

That’s where safecheckin comes into effect. Simply pay a small fee of $30 (called a false alarm fee) and get the added security of knowing that people will be called if you don’t happen to check back in on the website. They market the service as a way to notify relatives after a certain amount of time if you don’t check back in after skiing, but it could be used for any number of situations – dating, road trips, or hiking – basically anything.

They will make every attempt to contact you by land line or cell phone before they notify your designated responders so as to not freak out the authorities and your parents / concerned parties. When you sign in, you can leave all of the details of your location and who you are with so that whoever might be called to look for you can start in a logical place. This is a pretty smart service and while the design isn’t a very Web 2.0 look, the interaction is.

Find a blog author’s other sites by using a Aboutus wiki

Every once in a while I do a search for my own website with Google to see whats linking back, but doing a search this week returned a very interesting result.  When I searched for “Noheat.com” the number 2 result was a aboutus.org wiki link.  When I clicked around I noticed that they found a lot of my domains (not all though) and linked them up, also if I visited a site without a AboutUs wiki it autogenerated a wiki for the site which is pretty cool for building a database of sites and getting a nice link back.  I also noticed that site owners that edit their pages on Aboutus end up on the main page of Aboutus sending traffic to your site.  All in all this is a pretty nice site, and should be a useful resource in finding your favorite blog’s other sites.
