Disable Dumprep.exe in XP and Turn off Error Reporting in Vista

Suddenly your machine bogs down right at that critical moment, you reach for your Louisville slugger to give your PC a piece of your mind but you pause.  A further examination of your machine finds a new application running in the background tying up your precious resources.  The dreaded Dumprep.exe, what is Dumprep.exe?  Well if you use Windows XP its a Microsoft tool called “Windows Error Dump Reporting”.  Basically if some file crashes on your system Windows “phones home” via Dumprep.exe and sends a error report back to the mothership where it will deleted and never looked at.  The funny thing is that the dumprep.exe isn’t the most reliable program ever and can make a already bad situation worse.  So let’s get rid of the narky ET.

Disable Dumprep.exe on Windows XP:

   1. Right click on “My Computer” choose “Properties” from that menu.
   2. Click on “Advanced tab”.
   3. Click the “Error Reporting” button.
   4. Check the “Disable error reporting” box.

You may choose to uncheck the the box below it, “But notify me when an error occurs” if you want.

But wait!  There’s more!  If you are using Vista you get the same phone home with a different application.  So if you are using Vista, here’s your instructions to turn it off.

Disable Error Reporting on Windows Vista:

  1. Right click on “Control Panel”.
  2. Click on “System Maintenance”.  If you view your Control Panel by “Classic view” skip to the next step.
  3. Click on “Problem Reports and Solutions”.
  4. Click on “Change Settings” in the left sidebar.
  5. Now look for the “Advanced Settings” button and click it.
  6. You can now turn off “problem” reporting.

Wow I wish I would have seen this a while ago. Everyday I am forced into reboot by this stupid Dumprep program due to a issue with logitech drivers that crash all the time. So far so good with these changes.

bugs reported in volume by the “send this to Micorosft” actually do get addressed. If the issue is a 3rd party issue then someone like me has to get ahold of the 3rd party and try to tell them they have a crashing bug that should be fixed.

If it looking at the crash dump shows it is a Microsoft bug, then the team with the problem gets assigned the bug. When there is a reasonable number of repros of the crash to understand and fix the issue, then it is fixed for the next release. If there are a helluva lot of crashes, it’s a hotfix, if there are a decent number, it goes in to a service pack and if there are just enough to make it worth wild, then the bugs are fixed in the next os.

If you disable the crash reporting then you are slowing the speed bugs get addressed and giving yourself more to complain about how Microsoft does not fix bugs. Nice job dumbf#ck

Dude you are so fired. If you are the one responsible for fixing bugs in Windows and third party applications you’ve been sitting on your ass for a very long time. Do a search for Dumprep on Google and you will see whole legions of Windows users who agree with me. Maybe you could get a job with the Bush administration since you are so competitent.

Dumb rep is S___T! Windows is like a 5 year old in a damn candy store… always whining while you are trying to get REAL work done. Bunch of crap, how many new versions of win blows will they continue to make with out making any of them work right? As for I work there, you are a Imbisile. Microsoft doesn’t give a rats ass how we feel or what we have to go through. Never did, never will. All I know is when I am editing 300 photographs in Photoshop, and my dead line is 8 hiours away, I really don’t want to have to re boot or update some crap that will not affect me EVER from windows. Do I sound a bit dis pleased. you bet your sweet ass i am.f0

    Brilliant!
I’ve been trying to determine how to disable this for some time now!!!

95+ % of users will never go this far or even know how to find out what is bogging down their system so Microsoft will still be able to get a fully qualified sample set of what is causing their OS to halt to a crawl so often.

Thank you for the information Christopher Carey. you are a gentelman and a benefit to information systems worldwide.

I have followed your instructions for getting rid of dumprep.exe but my computer
does not have the capability as you describe. I’m running XP Pro and when I clic on My Computer/Properties/Advanced Tab there are no options available from there to disable the Dump Pgm. I also went to Control Panel and looked. NADA!
Is the accessibility different for XP Pro? I need to get this off my computer. HELP!

Such a pleasure to zap another Windows gift that keeps on (and keeps on, and keeps on) giving!

Good tip – hope it works. “Iworkthere” ought to *maybe* make the suggestion that sending a freaking text file shouldn’t need to take 100% of my resources in the middle of my work day. Here’s a novel thought: how about a VERY SMALL text file identifying the program and OS that piggybacks out when I send my mail? And if you need some more information, how about getting my permission? My computer cost me over $2,000; is it so much to ask that I be allowed to be in charge of how it gets used?

Seriously, how hard is Microsoft working on Winblows XP that there is still a need for this worthless error logging? Unless Bill Gates himself is reading these error messages while drinking his coffee at the breakfast table, the dumprep.exe program’s only function is to raise the blood pressure of millions of users and serves absolutely no purpose. Let Microsoft do their OWN work and stop forcing the consumers to be their bug reporting guinea pigs.

Got something to say?
