The other day we reviewed Stick for Windows, but we’ve been finding some extra functionality in Stick every day and I thought I would follow up with a couple other things you can do with Stick. Since I’ve installed Stick I have created a Gmail “Stick” or tab at the top of my screen so I can always get my gmail in a hurry. While I pretty much always have my Gmail open in Firefox there are times when my Firefox window gets buried and having a tab at the top of my screen to get my email makes sense since sticks overlay other programs.

Also I have realized that just about any widget can really be used with Stick. By putting in the html code in a text file, saving as html, and then linking up to the page with the Explorer tab I was able to put in just about any widget I could find. So basically I now have any widget I want in a stick (or tab) beat that Google Sidebar.

Check it out

Nice but… I wish the Tab title changes based on the URL title.

When you say you’ve got widgets running in a tab, what kind of widgets are you talking about? iGoogle widgets? Dashboard? Vista Sidebar?

A better explanation of what you mean and how to do it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

I think he is looking for more info on installing a gadget into a stick…

    1. Go to http://www.google.com/ig/directory?synd=open
    2. Select the Gadget you wish to install.
    3. Click “Add to your webpage”
    4. Configure your Gadget
    5. Press “Get Code”
    6. Open Notepad and paste code into a new notepad
    7. Save file, making sure to change extension from .txt to .htm
    8. Drag and Drop the file you create onto your stick.

I tried to make these instructions over simplified for people who are novices, it takes a matter of a few seconds to get your widget into your stick.

Vitaly, you can change the tabs title very easily. Just click on the properties.

Hmm? But that’s not what I meant.
I want them to change automatically based on the site title.
If Gmail title is (1 new mail) then so should be the tab.

I was checking out the “Stick for Windows” program, along with the Gmail option. It is very cool, BUT… VERY ANNOYING!! What I mean is that if I set my Gmail tab to refresh every 1 minute, the Stick application is getting active every 1 minute. That means that every other window I was working at before that is being deactivated. If I am in the middle of writing something, I have to click my window again to activate it. Annoying, right?

    Any solutions?

Umm…maybe I’m missing something, but where do you drag and drop the .htm file after you pasted the widget code into it? I’m confused….

@Shayaknyc: You don’t drag the .htm file, create an explorer tab and set the URL to the location of your .htm file

    Hope that helps

I really like playing around with sticks. They are great for adding some functionality to your windows desktop. I like how it adds tabs to the top of my screen that lets me access things. I am not sure about the gmail thing but I will give it a shot.

Got something to say?
