Using Google Buzz with any number of followers right now is an exorcise in patients and processing power. But there are ways to cut down the madness. One of nice features of Google Buzz is that it includes a way to import your twitter feeds and Google Reader feeds that you share. Sharing more makes for a more content on a the network, however if you follow a couple thousand people your feed looks like the whole internet is passing you by and to comment you have to be willing to run to catch up. By the time you get to comment your comment text is off screen.
Until Google invents the Google Buzz “Pause Button” the best thing you can do is click the “link to this post” link. When you do this you are taken to the static post that doesn’t move down the screen.
Adding friends is fun but look at who you are adding. The people who added you at the inception of Google Buzz were likely leaders in the tech industry. Now its a 14 year old or spammer following everyone. Pay attention to who you add otherwise you have no one to blame but yourself for the porn and spam in your feed.
Revisit your conversation – your comment in Gmail not in Google Buzz. There’s no better or more natural way to write than in gmail. I find old buzzes getting renewed all the time. If they didn’t show up in Gmail I wouldn’t be following my own conversation.
Having tons of friends puts a ton of load on your browser. Using Firefox 3.5 or Internet Explorer is not for the faint of heart, with more leaky memory than nanna. You will likely end up getting a unresponsive browser if you allow your feed to update during your work day. Google Chrome is likely to see a big boost from users unable to use Buzz on anything but Chrome. Add in Extensions and great bookmark support and Google Chrome has really come of age anyway.
Filters? Searching “Buzz – Public” takes out a ton of garbage from the Google Buzz feed. This means you are searching for only the pure Google Buzz from Google Buzz not Twitter, Google Reader, Picasa, Flickr, Twitter, and Google Reader. Use your search function a filter and you will start to see conversations that are more relevant to you. Try watching your favorite TV show while searching its name in Google Buzz. You are now tapped into the buzz on that particular show and can have conversations with fans.
Step away from your twitter feeds. Until Google finds a way NOT to batch 10 of your last Twitter posts at a time you should not import them. Go Google Buzz or nothing. The reasoning is people will remove you for Twitter bombing you because you take up their entire page.
Feel free to comment and add your own survival tips….
