AwkwardTV hacks the AppleTV

The folks over at AwkwardTV project have found a way to boot the Apple TV from an external USB drive attached to it, without opening the Apple TV case or removing the internal hard disk.As his video shows, Apple TV is booting a modified system off the external drive.

The AwkwardTV project is now looking to build a bootable image for USB drives based on the Open Source Darwin kernel which will allow mounting and editing the internal hard disk, so that the various hacks, such as enabling SSH, can be made without opening the case.

Avoid being caught with a end of life cycle Apple product

Apple is a wonderfully innovative company and they change their product often, this is wonderful except for everyone that buys the item before the most exciting product. No-one wants to walk out of the store with iPod 5 only to see the much cooler iPod 6 posters coming up before they leave. So what to do? Well if you are thinking about getting a new Apple product its a good idea to know where it is in its life cycle. Typical Apple product life cycles are one year, or less. Knowing a products life cycle can also save you money. For instance an outgoing product can be had for cheaper if you don’t care about having the latest and greatest. So how do know how far along a product is on its life cycle. Mactastic shows users a graph to help you understand where you are on any one of Apple’s products.

LG KE850 copies Apple or the other way around?

Which came first the chicken or the egg? It’s the age old question that people have asked since the dawn of time. Now just one more way to complicate it would be, which came first LG KE850 or iPhone. So did the Apple rip off the idea of the iPhone from LG or vice versa? One will never know, however they are very similar and you have to wonder when we can expect either of these smartphones in the US. LG claims Feburary, Apple in June. I anticipate even though the LG doesn’t carry the cool factor of Apple’s iPhone they will probably sell more, because LG sells to all of the major carriers. If this phone is available for Verizon Wireless I will be getting in line not because I dislike the iPhone but because I dislike changing carriers and getting into a contract with a carrier with spotty and unreliable service (in my area).

Crossfont helps you convert Mac fonts to PC fonts

Fonts are like shrubs around the house, when used properly they merely frame the house. When shrubs go wrong it can keep you from getting into the house or make the house ugly. Sharing shrubs is also hard, one that might prosper in one location and might not prosper in another. Ok enough about Shrubs. When you need to relocate your (shrub) Font to another system you will may have plug and play or plug and nothing. CrossFont is a cool little converter that converts your font to other formats for whatever use you need it for. This is great for the font you have on your Mac and suddenly needs to reappear on your PC for a tight deadline.
