Create a Firefox Search Plugin with only a right click

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I don’t know about you but I am a huge Craigslist fan, and when I realized that I could search for eBay items in the Firefox search box but there was no easy way to create a search plugin for Craigslist I went searching.  What I found was this really cool plugin that allows you to take any search box on a site and make a specialized search plugin out of it with only right click.  On the image above you see me making my own Detroit Craigslist plugin.  Add to search bar lets you add Firefox search functionality to just about any site.

Speed up Firefox

Now this is something a lot of you may already know about and use, but for those of you that don’t this provides a quick and easy way to speed up your browsing speeds for free. It makes multiple requests to the same server resulting in a faster browsing experience. What is it? Well, it’s a modification to the Firefox configuration.

Assuming you’re already using Firefox (If not, get it here — www.mozilla.com/firefox/) you should type about:config into the address bar. This will bring up the interface for viewing and setting a wide variety of configuration variables. You should change the entries listed below to the following values:

Alter ‘network.http.pipelining’ to ‘true’

Alter ‘network.http.proxy.pipelining’ to ‘true’

Alter ‘network.http.pipelining.maxrequests’ to ‘30′

Right-click anywhere and select New>Integer. Call it ‘nglayout.initialpaint.delay’ and set its value to ‘0′.

That’s it! Restart Firefox and you should immediately notice an improvement in browsing speeds! By Zlyzer

Copy your tabs into a pastable list

Digg list creators your Firefox add-on has arrived.  Copy all urls is an add-on by Jason Plasser at Plasser.net.  It basically will take all of the tabs that you have open in Firefox Borwser and create a list of urls and corresponding titles for each tab.  This can pretty handy for creating a list that might get ultimately dugg.  Lets say you are doing the top 20 list of WordPress plugins, you open up Google, do a search and open up the tabs that look interesting.  Then you go to your edit menu and click “Copy all URLs”.  Paste into your blog and you are ready to show off your shiny new list.

Spell Check other Firefox Fields

Firefox’s built in spellcheck is great however its not perfect.  For some reason the powers at be decided that you get to be an ace speller in some places and in others not so much but with a simple hack to your about:config you can have your spell checker in small text fields as well as big ones.

Just type “about:config” into your address bar.
Then type “layout.spellcheckdefault” into the filter bar
Change the default value from 1 to 2
You are done!

Now one thing I have noticed is that fields that are auto-filled by Google Toolbar or another auto-fill tool will not be spell checked.  Also some special forms for search do not work.

Missing Addons and Theme?

So one day you start up Firefox and suddenly things look a little too tidy, your theme has disappeared, your addons are installed yet seemingly missing in action.  So what do you do when your addons are missing?

Quite simple simply find you Firefox profile folder.  You can find out where that is by clicking here.  Then go into your extensions folder and delete the folder named “Staged-xpis”.  The restart your Firefox, you will have to reenter preferences for each of your addons but everything will be as it once was.

Make Tab Mix Plus Display more than one Row of Tabs

How to Geek has a really good article on how to make Tab Mix Plus for Firefox display more than one row of tabs with the click of the mouse.  As many times as I have fiddled with this addon I have never seen this option before.  It is defenitally worth a look.

“To set this option, you must have the Tab Mix Plus extension installed. Assuming you do, open up the Tab Mix Plus options dialog via the Tools menu.
Choose the Display tab/icon on the top, and then make sure you have the Tab Bar tab selected.”
