Copy and Paste, only better, without the internet
Copy and Paste are functions each and everyone of use everyday but seldom do we ask can we do better? While other sites are bubbling about copying to the web we here think thats just plain dumb. To take your sensitive data and truck it to the internet for others to possibly see is stupid. Let alone the fact that those services end up costing you money. ClipDiary is a solidly built free tool that very simply allows you to capture your copy and pastes for later use. Whether you need something copied a few minutes ago or last week its all there. Clipdiary can log clipboard history and record datain several formats: plain text, RTF (Rich Text Format) and bitmap images (BMP). So, besides saving parts of text, you can easily make series of screenshots, and Clipdiary will save them for you.
FileBox eXtender now Vista Compatible and Free
One of the features I missed the most from XP was a little Dialog Box Extender utility called FileBox eXtender. This simple program allowed you more control over your save and open file dialogs. For instance, when I use the open file dialog in a program I don’t want to switch to “details view” and “sort by date” every time I open the dialog. The settings I set should be automatic. Filebox does all this and more. There are tons of features such as being able to jump straight to a saved folder or recently used folder to drop your files when saving. You can also roll up windows so you can get your dialog boxes out of the way when you need to locate a place to save your file. The “window shade”-like button transfers to regular explorer windows as well so you can reclaim some screen real estate. Also included is a pin feature that will prevent any window you “pin” to the desktop from being covered by any other windows. FileBox used to be a shareware utility but its owners made it free when they didn’t think they could make the jump to Vista. In an unexpected move though they released a new version (also FREE) that is now Vista compatible.
Rename your Digital Camera’s files to pictures’s Date and Time

I take tons of pictures with my digital camera and of course I rename nearly none of them. So if you do the same thing as I you could end up with a file naming mess, possibly deleting files with the same file names.
But all is not lost your digital camera has its own built in clock which dates the file it saves inside the file if its a Exif supported camera, but when it comes to naming the file typically your digital camera will use a sequencial order making it possible to duplicate file names from different SD cards or different cameras.
NameExif via Shivaranjan takes the date and exact time found in the file (Exif) and renames the file to show when the file was taken. It grabs the time right down to the second making a truly unique file name that won’t over-write other files. You can also add a prefix or suffix at the beginning or end of the file. So let’s say that the pictures you are importing are from your Florida trip, now you can change the file name to Florida.2007.12.25-12.30.34.JPG which is way more meaningful than IMG_3242.JPG.
Prettier OSX to do lists with Do it

Its been a little while since we dusted off the old Powerbook for some OS X action but this little to-do list software was a must add to our soon to be replaced Powerbook. Sure there is a ton of great to do lists out there but not quite as pretty as this skinable gem from Jim McGowan. Each to do item can be linked with a file on your computer, a URL, such as the address of a website, or a contact from your address book. To dos can also be set as reminders in iCal. Oh yes and best of all its freeware.
