Find new software with new Social Network
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Mix together Web 2.0, Social networking, and Software and there you have Wakcopa. They showcase the software you use and let you review it. Do a search on the software that you use and you can find groups of people using the same software. Wakcopa makes it easy to find accompanying software which may accentuate your existing software. Or just get notified when the software you use gets an update. Wakcopa says “Because what you use on your desktop is who you are”. This is soo true for someone in a technical field, what about you?
Homepages Web 2.0 Style
Ah what to say about Homepage Startup. Its like someone took your favorite “homepage” of the 90s and run it through a Web 2.0 washer. It came out cleaner and smaller, and almost as useful. For me my “homepage” is my Alesti RSS reader or my Gmail so this really has little use to me. Someone will find use for homepage startup but without ads or any way of sustaining itself it looks to be smeared by other better funded sites. The site does have some nice ajaxy features about it. Like being able to move the boxes around and easily adding URLs without going through their registration process. Interesting Web 2.0 exorcise, get a peek before they run out of cash.
Track and Optimize to a Healthier Diet
Over here at NoHeat we are deliberately trying to watch what we eat. Too many late night coding binges can add to the bottom line. Besides it’s in vogue to eat well and take care of yourself. The problem is there really isn’t a easy way to know how to eat healthier without causing your self to become some kind of food expert. What if there was a way to input the food you eat into a database that could automatically make recommendations? Thats where TheDailyPlate comes in handy.
Create your favicons the old school way with Web 2.0
Want to create a favicon for your website, take a stop by favicon.cc to find a simple bit by bit editor. This editor takes care of your favicon the old school way no importing just bit by bit editing like the old days of ResEdit on the Mac. Its still a feat that you can do this live on the web instead in a separate application.
Fileswap like a StumbleUpon for files, or a slot machine for content.
This one is hardly useful but there is something entirely addicting about fileswap. Its really simple, you upload a file, and you get one completely random file back. Almost like a StumbleUpon for files, or a slot machine for content. You have the ability to vote on the content you receive, this keeps the music or pictures fresh and high quality.
Microsoft takes mapping to the ground with Live Search Maps Preview
Microsoft Live Search Maps in the ever quest to one up Google have created a virtual driving simulator based from actual pictures taken of the corresponding area from ground level. While it may be useful to view certain areas from ground level on a map, the usefulness at this point is real low. Other than the ability to walk or drive through two cities I am a little lost on what this can do for you. It is however fun to play with for a few minutes.
CNN website BETA preview
Everything is either beta or 2.0 now a days and why should CNN be any different. If you are a news junky like we are you will welcome their new format. They will finally be adding free video through a flash player instead of the Windows Media Player version they have had so long. Look for a much cleaner new cleaner layout. Also look out for a commenting section (like a blog) and live video from CNN.
Wiredness, the Right Photo Manipulation Tool for Bloggers
We kind of thumbed our collective noses at the previous tries at a Web 2.0 photo manipulator. After all every version of Windows has come with some kind of simple photo or BMP editor since the early days. Why in the world would you need a Web 2.0 to do such a simple task as resize or edit a picture? Wiredness seems to have gotten this kind of web application right though. First off its speedy, all photo rendering that was done was on par with desktop applications. One nice feature for bloggers is the ability to take a photo straight from the web resize and then export to your blog without so much as touching your desktop on your PC. This photo editor is full featured with every filter or effect that you expect from any other graphics editor. From Sharpen to Red Removal it has it all, worth a look for sure.
Create PDF Calendars on the fly with ePrintables
Sometimes you cannot escape how well old fashioned paper and pencil work when you are trying to visualized dates. I always get asked by the family novice PC users if I could print a calendar for them. I would always explain that they really didn’t need to print out their Google Calendar and they would just stare blankly at me asking again for a simple calendar. Well now they can do it themselves, this simple website will have even the greenest novices printing calendars all over the place. Aunt Ethel’s cat grooming schedule can now be tracked with good old pencil and printed calendar. Just create the calendar and ePrintable creates a PDF calendar for you on the fly.
Mercora comes gunning for Pandora and LastFM
So today I turned my browser away from Pandora and tried something new for a while, Mercora. For the life of me I cannot get the name right but I have a feeling I will be visiting this website a little more. Three things really stand out using Mercora. The first is the ability to search by an artist and have at your disposal all of the network’s songs at your pleasure. I found more songs to put into my iTunes que than a whole month of listening to Pandora, and thats just in one day. The second is the ability to listen to a “DJ” which plays like music that matches your taste. The interesting part is that after listening to the music for a while you become your own DJ. The third is the ability to stream Mercora music to any smartphone, with great success. Pandora is only now starting to enter this market with sprint.
