Metacafe and YouTube embedded in Wordpress
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
So some of you might have noticed that Noheat has been featuring some Metacafe and Youtube videos, embedded to boot. This new capability is courtesy of the My Video Wordpress plug-in from ozblog. It’s the only plug-in that I could find that was reliable at displaying embedded video from YouTube, Google Video, and Metacafe. Although there are tons of plugins out there that do the same thing this one gets the extra added benefit of being easy to use. Kudos to Ozblog!
Get on the ViraLink train for Links Back to your Site.
I’ve seen this link generator circulating around the internet and I suppose it’s worth a try. It’s easy to participate. All you need to do to is copy and paste the text below into a blog post. You may choose to look at the source code of the page if that makes it easier for you. Once you’ve added it to your site, I’ll probably receive a ping back. At this time (or soon as I can get to it), I’ll add your link to one of the stars below until the matrix is full. It’s a win-win situation for everyone for very little effort.
I am actually going a little further by adding this to my sidebar so ViraLink can be on my front page. I personally wonder if the name Viralink, may be a little too harsh, maybe?
Let me know if you have any questions or comments. Now get busy with the code!
———copy and paste the Viralink and instructions below this line———
Below is a matrix of 120 stars, I have already added a link to my blog onto one of the stars, all you need to do is copy and paste the grid into your blog and add your own link to one of the other spare stars, and tell others to do the same!

New Addition: When I receive a ping back or comment once you have added the Viralink to your site I will add your link to this grid, and each person who copies the grid from here will also link to your site!

Use Digg as a SEO tool to get found on Google

Digg is great at getting your website a deluge of traffic from one really popular story but there is a more to submitting your article to digg. Most people never think of using digg as a SEO tool.
Most diggers are let down when their article is not dugg and gets pushed back to the archives of digg. Everyone wants their article to be popular and to get on the front page but is it really beneficial to your site?
The first problem with getting dugg is that your website has to actually stay up and withstand the huge influx of traffic, if you have a Wordpress blog this is nearly impossible and even with Wordpress Caches you will most certainly not be able to withstand the onslaught of traffic.
The other part of the problem is that many websites will be using your digg article verbatim on their website, so generally if Joe’s website has a better pagerank than yours and he puts up your article your article now gets to be moved into next rung on Google (and so on) unless most of the people actually refer to your website as the source of the story (backlinks are very important to Google’s Page Ranking). Note: I have simplified Google pageranking an awful lot here, check out this article for a simple explanation of Google Page Rank.
So how do you use digg as a SEO tool instead? It’s simple just digg every story no matter how interesting to the Digg crowd. For instance, I wrote a story on how to convert a XLSX or DOCX to regular xls and doc files. You can do a search on Google for “Convert XLSX to XLS” and usually this site will be number one. How did I get there and why? First I dugg my own story. Then I waited, you see after searching on Google for popular searches I was able to determine that this particular article would be searched for often. The story was not sentilating enough for the digg crowd but it was completely useful to people doing searches on Google. Tip: Try MetaSpy to get your own ideas of articles people will search for. Because my article was on Digg Google picked it up quickly on their search ranking and gave me a the search terms I had put in for both of my subjects on Digg and the article. The Digg article later fell off and left two links to my website on the front page of Google where I get a considerable amount of traffic.
The idea here is not to get a overwhelming amount of traffic but to let the flame burn for a long time over multiple stories. When you use this model try to stay away from easily dated pieces like “Today Britney Spears went wacko and shaved her head” (although that could happen again). Look for things that will be useful and usable years later. One source on information people may be looking for can be found at our perennial favorite Metafilter.
The point is to let your articles stand on their own, sure your blog’s articles may not be Enquirer like catchy but if you were Wallstreet Journal useful wouldn’t that be better for your readers and by proxy you?
