Watch stuff melt, implode, or explode in a Microwave

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Well this isn’t terribly useful but damn if it isn’t entertaining. I feel a little guilty for recommending some Kraft ViralMarketing but Watching stuff melt or explode in a Microwave is just priceless and of course a time waster. So I created a new Category for Noheat called Time Waster of the Day (use your announcer voice). So take a second and watch stuff explode, melt, or implode into a bubbling mess and enjoy your few new minutes of wasted bliss.

Convert your JPEG into a Vector Graphic

So you have yourself a JPEG but its looking like a Lossy pixelated hot mess.  You could start from scratch and trace the image in Illustrator or flat out cheat and have VectorMagic do it.  Thats right you put your BMP or JPG in one end and out the other comes a vector object.  I used this service when I was working on some Nascar software for work and needed to get some logos vectorized for use in a Flash game.  Now don’t expect the resulting file to be a super simple or editable file for complex images but it works in a pinch.  When you sign up you get 2 free tokens for 2 free conversions, the rest will cost you some coin but if you rarely need to convert a file it may be worth your time.

Blist is like Filemaker on Web 2.0

I have to admit it I am a old Filemaker fan.  The power of the regular joe (not the plumber) to create a database for themselves cannot be underestimated.  Once someone can harness information and relate it in a way that makes sense to them they can truly be masters of that information.  Even a novice can create a database to manage your contacts, products, items, or occasions.  Each part of the database is customizable to look like and react the way you want it to.   Just think of it as Filemaker for the cloud computing set.

iGoogle and Apple’s Dashboard equal Schmedley

Most everyone I know has a iGoogle start page.  Almost everyone’s start page looks alike…bland, even mine.  That was until I discovered Schmedley.  Picture your iGoogle start page with a Apple Dashboard look.  True there’s not a ton of gadgets to be added yet but this has tons of promise.  Each gadget that gets loaded into Schmedley is loaded from a OSX like dock at the bottom.  Once you start playing with your start page you will find it super easy to customize and the gadgets are very well done.  My biggest pet peeve with this is the addition of extra gadgets.  It would be nice to import OSX gadgets into Schmedely and run them from there instead.  It would also to be able to access your gadgets from a hotkey.  If you want to add a little extra flare to your mashup start page this is definitely worth a look.

Keep track of your homework and assignments with Soshiku

Wow is everything Web 2.0 now?  Soshiku is a web application that helps students keep track of their assignments and their due dates.  It also adds a neat little discussion (cheat) forum for students in the same class or working on similar assignments.  For each assignment you can attach notes, tasks, and documents.  Personally if I were still a young man in high school or college and toting around a iPhone or a laptop I might use Google Calendar to keep track of my assignments and a todo list such as Tooledo but this integrates the two into a nice clean package and it’s worth a look.

eCal’s Scientific Calculator does it all

Yeah its been a while since I’ve posted but when I do post I make it good…Sorry for the fans but a crazy work schedule, 4 kids, and combining two houses will take it’s toll on your time to blog.  Didn’t hurt any that where we moved is a virtual broadband black hole.  More on that later but for now…  It slices it dices it calculates and converts, its the online scientific calculator over at eCalc and its sweet.  You name it, eCalc calculates it.  Also as a extra added benefit it deletes the last 8 years of George Bush (don’t we wish).  Seriously it can be added as Google Gadget or you can download it to your Windows PC and use it as a application.

See where News is made

Okay I can totally see this website better working as a screensaver as its a little hard to get news one line at a time and one place at a time.  However the integration is pretty cool.  Actually I would like to see a reverse version of this site, meaning you click on a spot on the map and get news for that region, or the type of news based on region.  So say I am interested in Tech News and Internet close to Michigan I can see news based on region.  This website is works because you get a visual idea of where things are happening in the world.  So many people watch the news but if you were to ask them where in the world news takes place they couldn’t show you on the map where it takes place.  We’re looking at you Sarah Palin.

Unknown Devices get Known

How many times have I procrastinated installing some new hardware only to find it later and have no idea where I put the drivers for that generic webcam much less who manufactured it.  Windows is no help with its hillbilly addressing for devices.  Its like asking “who is this person” and getting the reply “a person”.  Unknown Devices, the software not the problem plows deeper into the devices hardware to find out more about this new fangled device you are attaching.  Getting useful information such as manufacturer and chip details that can help you find out where to get the drivers so your handy dandy device you just attached can be used.

ColorCop a simple eyedropper tool that goes anywhere

Its pretty inevitable you will need to pick up a color from somewhere at sometime.  ColorCop allows you pick up the color information from just about anything that shows up on your screen.  Values are either RGB or HTML colors, and automatically get copied to your clipboard.  Also if you need to capture a bunch of colors all at once it saves the last 7 in your history so you can retreive later.  Its super fast and can be loaded to a flash drive in a pinch to pick up colors from the desktop of where-ever you happen to be.
